what foods should i avoid???

i have read about some foods to avoid because they are washed in the unpurified water--lettuce and ice cubes are the ones i remember the most. are there other things i shoud stay away from so i dont get '' montezoomas furry '' :eek:.

Maybe I've been lucky, but in 8 trips spanning the last 6 years I've never had a problem with the food, and you can believe me when I say that I like to eat.:o Years ago (like 40 years ago) I had a couple of bouts with MR (Montezuma's Revenge) from ice cubes.

Other things that you should stay away from are the Margaritas in Cozumel. They serve them in a fishbowl.:eek: I've seen more people sick from drinking tequila than from eating the food.

thanks for the help. it is '' revenge isnt it, not furry :o ''. i will be carefull to not drink the margaritas ( IN A FISH BOWL :eek: ) and stick with a nice cold corona or a pina colada :D.

Many weeks spent in Yucatan and Campeche including small rural towns. Never one problem. And yes, I drink and eat. Ice cubes come from the local ice plant from purified water.

im glad to hear you didnt get sick. i have read on many boards about not drinking the drinks with ice cubes. but maybe they just got a bad batch of water. i know i will have a great time.

And just maybe an outdated "old wives" tale from 75 yrs ago. What sense does it make for a Mexican to make visitor's or neighbors sick?

very true about the '' old wifes tale ''. but what brings on the montazula revenge that i have heard about. i sure dont want to get that if i can avoid things that bring it on. :confused:

Someone's uncle's cousin that knew someone that heard about someone who got sick after visiting Mexico. Did you know about all the cases of Norovirus on cruise ships?

Two port calls and three 2 wk vacations to the Yucatan including travels to small rural towns and never a hint of any sickness.

Carry some Imodium. I do but it's about 10 yrs old. lol

Of course it's fine to drink bottled water, beer, soda and the coffee is usually excellent. And of course cubed ice in drinks.

The only way that you will get fresher fish is to catch them yourself. The fish market is behind the resturant. You should take a walk through. It will take your breath away.:D Literally!

Don't worry about Montezuma's Revenge; if this was 30 yrs ago, then I'd be concerned, but the Mexican's are tourism specialists now. All you'll have is fun. But if you're worried about the ice cubes in your margerita, then drink your tequila straight like I do! Have fun!

that is great to know. this will be my first time there and i am taking all precautions to not get sick on the trip. but now i know i dont have anything to worry about and i can eat and drink all i like. :D

I think HDawson is getting a commission from LSB for every whole fried snapper they sell. Just kidding buddy:D

Are the food and drink prices reasonable? Do they take dollars or will we need pesos? Also, we speak very little Spanish (but working on it) :) Will this be a problem in Progreso?

Although we have not been to this side of Mexico before, we have spent 3 weeks over the last couple of years in or near Puerto Vallarta. No problem with food or water in restaurants. My wife was ill after our second visit, but feels it was water she got in her mouth in the shower.

Le Saint Bonnet's menu looks extremely inviting. They offer machaca (dried beef soaked in water/broth) and scrambled eggs for breakfast. This is one of our favorite breakfast dishes. We will probably visit them for that, then explore and come back for lunch for the whole snapper.
