Our Review of the Dawn 10/15-10/22

We just got back from the Dawn on Sunday. This was our first cruise ever. It was just me and my husband. We are in our 30s and celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary on this trip.

We were so excited about going on our first cruise. I had been reading reviews and tips for months and was so ready to just experience it all for myself. We are New Yorkers so my parents graciously offered to drive us to the port. We don't live far from the port and took a practice run the week before just to be sure we'd know what we had to do and where we needed to be. We didn't realize that on the morning of our cruise, there would be an MS marathon going on. The roads were closed and we had to make our way around via the side streets. Traffic was tremendous and it took us two hours to get to the port. I was so nervous thinking we were going to be late or miss something important. We arrived at the port at about 11:45 and when we pulled up to the pier, there were several people waiting to help us with our luggage. We went inside and found out that we had to go to this waiting area where there were already several other people waiting. There was plenty of room for everyone and it worked out great, we didn't miss anything at all and would have had to wait anyway. This way we got to spend some more time with my family whether there was traffic or not. They gave us forms to fill out since we'd be visiting the Bahamas on this particular trip. Everything was very organized. Check in was an absolute breeze. We had passports with us even though we didn't really need them for this trip. We thought it would be a good idea and the woman at the check in desk said it was so much easier for them when people had passports.

When we got on the ship, everyone was heading for lunch. We went to the Garden Cafe (which is the Dawn's buffet) and had a very nice lunch. There was a lot of variety. We walked around the ship a bit and it was just so beautiful and at first overwhelming. By the next day, we were learning our way around the ship. Although, even towards the end, my hubby would ask which way we had to go. It was funny! So many people seemed lost at first but you find your way around after a while. We found our room and were able to go in without any problem. It was all ready for us. The luggage arrived after we set sail. Speaking of that, it was so breathtaking leaving the port and passing by all of the sights, the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, just viewing that skyline. Even if you live in New York, the view from the ship was so unbelievable, it was like seeing it all for the first time. We took many pictures and stayed at the aft (back) of the ship where there was hardly anyone else there with us. It was cold but we kept each other warm and were so ready to start our vacation!!! We had a balcony room on the 10th deck forward (towards the front of the ship) Our stewards Larry and Ingma were wonderful and very attentive. They were there when we needed them and their service was excellent! My husband is diabetic and when he asked for a container to put his used needles in, he was given one immediately and they kept checking in to see how we were doing and if we needed anything at all.

FOOD - We really enjoyed the food on this trip. After reading so many different reviews, we were just ready to see for ourselves. We are not picky eaters by any means but of course you always hope there will be things you will like and that the quality will be good. Since my hubby is diabetic, he was able to enjoy himself and still have dessert. Every night there was a selection of sugar free goodies and he was very satisfied. I have to say that we did not eat at any of the specialty restaurants so I cannot comment on them but we did utilize room service, eat at the Buffet, the Venetian, Impressions and the Blue Lagoon (their 24 hour restaurant). The Blue Lagoon had a great wonton soup, burgers and chili (spicy!!!) and we really enjoyed going there. It was like a mini diner. All of the main dining rooms have the same menu. The selection and quality of all of the food was great. We really liked the Venetial with their huge windows and had the same table 3 times! It was quiet and secluded and very romantic. We ate their on the night of our anniversary and were treated to a beautiful cake and a lovely rendition of "Let Me Call You Sweetheart". So romantic and fun!!! There are six rooms at the buffet. Some of the stations had the same food but if you went to the different stations, you found something different at almost all of them. For breakfast, there was a plethora of cereals and breads, eggs, french toast, pancakes, bacon, ham, sausage, jams, peanut butter, an omelette station and a waffle station. They had a separate station just for toast. There was juice, coffee and hot chocolate, tea, nothing else you could want. The food was always hot and fresh. They also had a nice variety for lunch and would have a New York Deli section and a section just for vegetarians. The dinner at the main dining rooms was always great and the service was excellent. We went to dinner early every night and never had to wait on line for anything. That is the key, either go early or late.

NIGHT LIFE - the nightclubs and the bars were great too. We are not partiers or big drinkers but went to Gatsby's (a piano bar) a few nights and chatted with the pianist, Dan Hodges, who was a very nice gentleman. He took our requests and we just sat and relaxed and enjoyed ourselves. Pearly Kings Pub was a fun place. Hubby got to watch some sports and they had trivia games during the day. The drinks were very good and the atmosphere was terrific at both places. Dazzles Lounge always seemed very busy. They had karaoke every night and the Java Cafe had great coffee and drinks too. If you are not a drinker, you can still go and get any mixed drink without alcohol. They also had rootbeer floats and a great chocolate drink too. Room service was always great and it was so nice to be able to place an order by utilizing their little door cards and filling them out each night and putting them on the door handle. You tell them what you want and what time you'd like it delivered. It was great having morning coffee, juice and a muffin while sitting on our balcony and overlooking the beauty of the ocean. I can still close my eyes and see it all.

ENTERTAINMENT - We saw a great magic show (a tad corny but pretty good) by Greg Gleason and his group. It was something different and fun to do. We also saw a terrific comedy show by The Second City from Chicago. Go see them if you have a chance! They were so funny and I was actually crying with laughter. It was a great show. We didn't go to see Bollywood but heard good things about it and the last night there was a variety show which was very good. There was so much to do or you could opt to do nothing at all. They had trivia every day, bingo, many classes and seminars, the list goes on and on. Every night you would get their flyer, the Freestyle Daily delivered under your door. This told you everything you needed to know about the events of the next day, the dinner schedules, the specials. It was very helpful.

There was such an abundance of stuff to do but truth be told, we were there to relax and relax we did! We had a wonderful couple's massage at the Eldorado Spa. There are separate lockers for men and women. You go in and put on your robes and then they take you to a relaxation room where you fill out this form to let them know a little about yourself and the experience you were hoping to gain from the visit. Then a woman came in to chat with me for a brief consultation and took me to see my husband who was waiting in his own relaxation room. They then took us to a large, lovely private room with a huge hot tub filled with bubbles for a 25 minute relaxation bath and then onto the tables for our massages. They were wonderful! We were buttery for the whole day! We had the use of their pool, sauna, showers and jacuzzis for the day. Otherwise, if you did not get any treatments, you had to pay $15.00 a day per person which would have still been worth it. It was always so quiet and peaceful and hardly anyone utilized the spa while we were there. We went mostly on port days where a lot of people get off the ship. On those days, there are always specials so take a look there. We mostly enjoyed the reclyning jacuzzi, very nice touch.

PORTS - Our cruise took us to Port Canaveral, Florida, Freeport, Great Stirrup Cay and Nassau. Since we'd visited Florida so many times, we stayed on the ship. Mostly everyone else got off so it was like having this huge ship all to ourselves. That was the day we had the massages. We were in absolute heaven all day. We also did not get off at Freeport. It just did not look like much to us and we were still in absolute relaxation mode so we enjoyed a quiet day by the pool. Word of caution for all of you inexperienced island travelers - SUNBLOCK!!!!! I burned like a hot tamale and am still red!!!! The sun at the islands is so much stronger. We had some serious SPF too and I still burned! Yikes! But it was a lesson and I know better next time to not bake in the sun all day long even though it felt sooooo good at the time. We really wanted to come home with nice tans and there were people that were so dark and looked so good. I just couldn't do too much more time in the sun. My hubby got some nice color but I am now peeling! So worth it though, I was on vacation, who could complain???

The pool was nice, a little small but we had more than enough room. The water, to our surprise, was salt water! That was strange but they explained that they drain the pool and fill it up every night with the different water from all of the ports. Very interesting. There was always room in the jacuzzis too. They come around and ask if you want something to drink. I had a wonderful Pina Colada and my hubby had the soda card and would always get a fill up. The thing with the soda card though is that you can't use it for room service and at any of the bars. For that, they would give you a can and you'd have to pay. Every time you would order a drink, you'd have to sign the receipt and you'd be charged an automatic gratuity.

Great Stirrup Cay (the private island) was so nice. We did not get off right away. We wanted to wait until the crowds died down. Even though we did this, by the time we got there, it was crowded but we found a spot with no problem. There was plenty of room for everyone. There were areas to tan and bake, there were areas with tables and hammocks, there were areas that were secluded. It was just wonderful! There was a gift shop and stands for drinks and food. They had a great barbecue and we had an absolue blast and were so happy we got off there. It was fun to watch all of the people who had booked the parasailing and scuba diving excursions. They all seemed to be having a ball. I almost wished I had booked the parasailing but knew that once I was up there, I'd have been such a chicken so it was fun watching someone else do it. They really take you up there!!!! Just watching the ship from the tender boat as it floated in the crystal clear blue ocean was a sight to behold!!!! Something I will not soon forget.

That night we sailed to Nassau. We were supposed to arrive around 8:00 p.m. After dinner (around 7:15 or so - I think) we were walking by a window and I saw all of these lights. I said to my hubby, "I think we are there". We went out on deck and sure enough, we were at Nassau. I didn't realize how big it was going to be! We had a nice view from our balcony and although we planned on getting off of the ship, we decided to stay on and just have a relaxing evening. We got up very early the next day (our anniversary!) - 5:00 a.m., had breakfast and got a cab before anyone else was even up. We were driven right to the front door of Atlantis and what a sight it is!!! Wow! It was fun to ride in the cab and the cab driver was so friendly and helpful. I've heard that the cab ride was only $4.00 but that is for each person and our driver told us on the way it would be $10.00 plus $1.00 for the toll and on the way back, it was the same thing minus the toll. We didn't care though and were just happy to be doing it on our own at our own pace. Atlantis is gorgeous. No-one was around at the time we went and it was like we were the only two people in the world. The casino was a nice size (we didn't win!) and the hotel itself is something to see. Everything is so big and well laid out. The grounds were gorgeous!!!! You have to go see the huge slide that dives into the shark tank! Amazing!!! We got into the dig without any problem at all, and were the only people inside. It was nice seeing all of the different marine life. We enjoyed that. They also have their own outdoor village market place and it had a lot of specialty stores, a deli, a Starbucks, Jamba Juice, a place with maps and information for the resort and everyone was so friendly. They are building some condos there and looks like they are adding on a few new buildings.

MISC. The ship's casino was fun and I won a few nights and lost on others, just like at any other casino. It was small but we always found a slot machine. The gift shop was nice and had a variety of stuff there. They sold alcohol and cigarettes that you purchased but did not receive until the last night of your cruise. There were customs documents to fill out on the last night and you had to claim what you bought on the ship and at the islands. There was a certain limit but since we didn't spend more than $200.00, we weren't paying to much attention to it.

Our cruise director, Jimmy, and his assistant, Ingrid were great. They were always updating you on the goings on and anything you might have missed, was on your television. They had a fun show where they'd take you through the different parts of the ship, the galley, the place where the crew lives, etc. It was so eye-opening to see how the crew really live on the ship. They don't really have it easy, have to share a bathroom, most cases, there are four to a small room with bunk beds. Yet, they are always pleasant and helpful and it just made us appreciate them that much more.

I have to say that we really enjoyed ourselves on this trip. It was a wonderful experience. I got a little seasick one night but had forgotten to take my Bonine so that was another experience for me to learn. You really do feel the ship move. Our bed moved every night and when you were in the bathroom, you felt yourself going from side to side. It was something for me to get used to. The seas were fairly calm and I still felt everything. I will say though, that I felt it more in our room than anywhere else. You really do have to develop sea legs!!! Some people just seemed fine and like nothing bothered them. My hubby said he was fine and felt nothing but it did take a little getting used to for me. The first night we were home, when I went to lay down to go to sleep, I actually had the sensation that the bed was moving! Funny stuff. Now it's fine though, no after effects.

Freestyle is definitely the way to go for us. We were not pressured to do anything or go anywhere. On the formal night, there were people that were dressed in gowns and people sitting next to them in capris and polo shirts. We dressed nicely every night but my hubby did bring his jeans and wear them to breakfast every morning. I was glad I brought a lot of clothes. That is just me though. By the end of the trip, everything was just a bit tighter on me. LOL!!!! I really did not go overboard (excuse the pun!!!) but I enjoyed myself and walked a lot and still gained a few pounds. It was worth it though! You are on vacation, sit back, relax, let it all happen. Don't stress before you go, it will all work out fine. Just keep reading these boards for tips and you'll do great! I am a planner and an organizer and was too stressed out before we left and was so worried about getting it all in and doing everything "right". I now know to just go and enjoy and yes, be somewhat prepared but just take it all in because sooner than you know it, it's back to work and back to reality!

I wish you all Happy Cruising!!!! Feel free to ask any questions. I'm more than happy to help!!!! :)

Fantastic review, thank you SO much! We're leaving Sunday so reading such a great review right before we go makes me even more excited!

Do you know what movies were playing onboard? I have to avoid the sun (I'm as fair skinned as you'll ever see and don't go in the sun between 10:00 and 2:00) so I'm wondering what options there are for indoor activities.

What were the temperatures in the different ports? I know you said you burned like a hot tamale (that would be me in the sun!) so I'm guessing it was nice and warm....and added plus since I hear there might be flurries for our sailaway Sunday!

Lastly, do you know if they have new menus in the dining rooms? We read on CC that they were changing menus in November, I was just wondering if they were in effect yet? And did they have half price specials in the specialty restaurants? (I know you didn't eat there, but thought you might have seen if they offered discounts for early dining).

Thanks again for a great review and for REALLY getting me excited ........... 5 more days!!!

I was on the Dawn last week as well. I believe the movies were Mission Impossible III, The DaVinci Code, the Benchwarmers, American Dreamz, RV, and Inside Man. There may have been 1 more, but I don't remember. They were also on the TV all week (channel 9 I think)

What were the temperatures in the different ports? I know you said you burned like a hot tamale (that would be me in the sun!) so I'm guessing it was nice and warm....and added plus since I hear there might be flurries for our sailaway Sunday!

Temps were in the mid to high 80s while in Florida and the Bahamas. The Freestyle Daily predicted rain just about everyday, but we never saw any. It was a bit cooler on Monday and Saturday (going down and coming back). We were able to sit out Sat. morning, but by afternoon it was a little too cool for my comfort and by evening we weren't even walking outside.

Not sure about the menus but they did have the 1/2 price every night between 5:30 and 6:00. We took advantage of this on the first night, but did not go to any other pay restaurants after that. Hope this information helps. Have a great cruise.

Hey guys,

So glad you liked my review. :) For those of you going soon, you will have such a wonderful time. Don't listen to any of the negative stuff. It really is what you make of it and we could not have been happier, believe me. The Dawn is wonderful, the staff is excellent and the great experience will stay with you for a long time.

Let me try to answer all of your questions as best as I can. Not sure if this will come out right (lookwise) but I'm going to copy and paste all of your questions and respond. Some questions were already answered so I'll answer the ones I don't see responses to or supplement each one:

One question: You said the bars would not honor the soda card? I thought you could use it anywhere EXCEPT room service.

~Connie

Connie - I just checked with my hubby - so sorry - he said that he was able to get soda in the bars but it just had to be tap soda, you couldn't get a can. He was not able to use it for room service but is pretty sure he could use it everywhere else like the dining rooms and buffets, etc. I never saw him order a soda when we were in the bars and that's probably why I thought he wasn't able to. We did order a soda one night from room service and there was a $2.00 charge.

What were the temperatures in the different ports? I know you said you burned like a hot tamale (that would be me in the sun!) so I'm guessing it was nice and warm....and added plus since I hear there might be flurries for our sailaway Sunday!

Lucky Root - The temperatures were always in the upper 80s. I really think we were pretty lucky. There was abundant sunshine every single day and that is remarkable for October! It was pretty hot everywhere and the sun is so strong so be careful! If you burn like me, you really need to either cover up or wear an extreme SPF! Hope that helps. I was so nervous about the weather before we left but here is a tip: Watch or log onto the weather channel and every 50 minutes (1:50, 2:50, etc.) before the hour, there is a tropical update. They give you blow by blow of the weather conditions for the Caribben, Bahamas, Gulf, etc.

Do you know what movies were playing onboard? I have to avoid the sun (I'm as fair skinned as you'll ever see and don't go in the sun between 10:00 and 2:00) so I'm wondering what options there are for indoor activities.

Great choice of movies. They are listed outside of the cinema on Deck 12. Star Cruiser answered that one pretty well. They had a nice cinema and did show the movies every day on the television. There are so many indoor activities, please don't worry about that at all. There's something for everyone. They really do a great job making sure you are busy if you want to be and you will have all of your info available to you again the night before from your Freestyle Daily. They've got stuff listed from morning until night. You won't be bored! I only stayed in the sun one day and was very happy that I was not bored although admittedly, I did do a lot of relaxing. They give you all of the info on the activity and what time it starts. There are some you have to pay for (certain exercise classes and seminars - not sure what the cost is as this info wasn't listed).

The menus in the dining rooms were the same exact ones that I have seen posted here for the last few months. One of our servers told us that the new menus go into effect sometime in early November so they are still the same. The food was really good and there was a good variety. There were definitely half price deals in the all of the specialty restaurants and on your first night, they run pretty good deals. Your Freestyle Daily will definitely give you the heads up on the deals the night before. I hear that you have to book early though so keep that in mind! I hope all of this helps.

shoreless, lastingtouch, jp2001, Geo&Me - thanks! It was really a wonderful anniversary and Freestyle is terrific. We'd do it again in a heartbeat. We really loved the Dawn and think it was an excellent first time experience. So glad you guys liked the review. I couldn't say enough good things about this trip. I'd go again tomorrow if I could sneak onboard!!!! LOL!!!! :)

Anything else I can help with, please let me know. ;)

Thanks for the great review! I'm on the Sun. Oct. 29th cruise which is only a few days away! Do you have a list with the prices of the in-port spa deals? If you saved the daily activity sheets would you mind listing them out by port day? This is my first NCL cruise so I'm not sure how good they will be and would like to plan to take advantage of them if I could.

Thanks again for a great review!

Thanks so much for a terrific review. I loved my first cruise so much I became totally addicted :D ! Be aware - balcony cabins are really addicting

Quick question - on the private island are there floats available? the simple one person (heavy plastic) floats. I leave Sun and nobody has really been able to answer this  . You know.. person rents it, it floats on the water in a restricted area of the beach and you just float around for a few hours?

I'm sorry, I know this sounds lame... but I seriously can't find out :( .. i know there's parasailing and jetskis, etc.

Thanks so much!

Nancy

What a refreshing change....to read a such a positive review. You went on your cruise with an excellant attitude and had a fabulous time as a result of it. The Dawn really is a beautiful ship and "freestyle" is the only way to go for us as well. ;)

Thank you for taking the time with all your special details. It was super! :D

$180 sounds about right. We did it on one of our first cruise and it was the greatest. It was our first massage.

If you like massages, try the Hot Stones Massage.

They run special on port days, so that's when to go. If you are a Latitudes Member, there is a day and the prices are really reduced.

Happy Sailing,

Hi everyone!

nlptes - no question is lame, trust me. I asked so many questions before we went on our first cruise that I thought people were getting tired of seeing my name listed here. LOL! I can tell you that when we got to the island, there were a ton of floats all over the place and it didn't seem like anyone was renting them. There were two just sitting by our chair and two separate people came by and asked if I was using them and then I saw other people using them when they were done. But, according to the Freestyle Daily, they are for rent. Here is some info direct from the Freestyle Daily for that day: Free Services include: island snack, hiking trails, volleyball, ping pong, first aid station. Options billed to your room: bar service (the island has one bar), snorkel equipment, rafts and floating mats, beach massages, Australian airbrushed tatoos. Options that require cash: Straw market, snorkeling: $29.00 for adults with instructors available all day on the beach. Snorkeling starts from the beach and not from a boat. What is not there that you will need to bring with you: towels (bring them from the ship) - you can get them at the pool.

USC fan - our particular massage was $250.00. This included the relaxation bath and the massage and then we had the use of the spa the whole day. This was on a port day (Port Canaveral). They only have specials on certain things. Not everything is discounted on port days. It was worth it though! Here, in New York, when I go for a massage just for me, it's $100.00 and I don't get to have my hubby there. They also charge a 15% gratuity to your bill. It was so nice. You get about 25 minutes in the relaxation tub and 50 minutes for the massage but it seemed much longer to us. We were in heaven! Such a nice experience to enjoy together. It was wonderful! Go for it! ;)

micdenver - I am so sentimental so of course, I kept the info. I cannot figure out how to attach it to this message. I scanned but have no idea where to go from there. Nothing works but here is some info from the Spa for port days. I hope this helps you. This includes ALL port days. They are open from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. on port days. They have: Exotic Body Polish: $75.00 for 50 minutes; Body Combo: $65.00 for 30 minutes; Beach massage special: 25 minute back, neck and shoulder for $55.00; Any two of these for $99.00: mini facial, back massage, mini reflexology, lime and ginger exfoliation and a hydrating milk wrap; a back massage with acupuncture special: $110.00 for 50 minutes; All five of these things for one price: rejuvenating eye treatment, european mini facial, deep conditioning hair treatement with scalp, neck and shoulder massage, moisturizing hand treatment and a foot and ankle massage for $99.00 (seems like a good deal to me); Exotic mud mask with exfoliation and scalp massage for $65.00 for 50 minutes. :o

This was something I was dying to know about too before we left. It seemed I could find info on what they offered but none of the prices. I hope this gives you a good idea of what they have to offer. The spa is very clean, quiet and laid out nicely. We really enjoyed our time there. The staff is very friendly and accomodating. There is also a juice bar there with yummy smoothies :p (not included - they get charged to your room card and run about $3.00-$5.00 depending on what you want)
