rogerdawhip Posted September 11, 2007 #2 Share Posted September 11, 2007 Grand Circle has a great river cruise on the Rhone thru Provence. I went on this trip 3 years ago. Thay are also starting their Seine river cruise again next year. This one goes from Paris to Normandy.
Roadlamp Posted September 18, 2007 #3 Share Posted September 18, 2007 We are going out in October on Avalon's Tranquility. It's our first time on that line. We will let you know how we liked it. The cabins are supposed to be a little larger than some other lines.

It's a nice itinerary. Don't matter which line you go on. We had a swell time all in all. Carole
TIMAS Posted October 10, 2007 #5 Share Posted October 10, 2007 We just did the Burgundy & Provence on July 30, 2007. It is an excellent cruise except the M/S Chardonay is listed in their information as going into service in 2000. That is true except the ship (tub) was built in 1956. We spent an entire week in France in August with no air-conditioning. The system is filled with mold and can be very dangerous. The three previous occupants of our cabin registered the same complaint. GCT did nothing for us except to put two small fans in the cabin. We were on the top deck, but France has a lot of bugs and mesquitos on the river.
letsgo39 Posted October 10, 2007 #6 Share Posted October 10, 2007 Avalon has a new ship,The Scenery, which will be cruising from Paris to Nice and Nice to Paris on the Rhone starting in 2008. We cruised on the Avalon Tranquility, Budapset to Amsterdam in July and it was absolutely wonderful. If you look carefully on these boards there are basically only raves about the Avalon experience. When we were cruising in July we heard that several of the departures on the Scenery were booked within a couple of days of the schedule coming out for 2008..We plan on doing this cruise in 2009. Carhut Posted October 11, 2007 #7 Share Posted October 11, 2007 I agree with Timas about the French trip. The trip was great, but the Chardonnay left a lot to be desired. It's old and small. Even though we only had 45 passengers, it still was very crowded in the dining room and the lounge. The A/C did work for us, but the lights kept dimming off and on and you always wondered if they were going to lose power or what. We were on the bottom deck with portholes, but as soon as we got to the bottom of the steps you could smell the plug in air fresheners trying to disguise the musty smell. One day we came back from a tour and they had the door jams off several of our rooms and had pulled the carpet back looking for a water leak into the deck below where the crew stayed. They had to access their quarters by lifting a trap door on the front deck and going down steps to the area completely below water. I can only imagine how moldy and musty that area must be. I highly recommend this itinerary, but not on this boat. We took this trip Aug. 22, 2007.
aneka Posted October 14, 2007 #8 Share Posted October 14, 2007 We just booked the Avalon Scenery with Globus via affordable tours. This is a 12 day tour that begins in Nice, cruises for 7 nights in Provence and Burgundy and then travels to Paris. This just might meet your needs. The ship is brand new and it seems people on this board say good things about Avalon. Annette
p598738 Posted October 14, 2007 #9 Share Posted October 14, 2007 Very much enjoyed GCT Chardonnay in Sept 2006. Yes, it's small. Yes it's old. The food and staff more than made up for that. We loved it. This year, Gate 1 MS Deutschland Rhine/Moselle. Now this was OLD and BAD.

We cruised on the Avalon "Tranquility" Budapest to Amsterdam in July and everything was perfect.I will be very interested to hear your comments when you cruise on the Avalon Scenery in France. We hope to do that cruise in 2009. When will you be sailing? Letsgo39
aneka Posted October 15, 2007 #11 Share Posted October 15, 2007 Hi Letsgo39, We are sailing on the Scenery on Sept 14th, 2008. It seems like a long time from now, but it was amazing how booked up the ship was already when we booked! I promise to post our impressions after we return.
