Liberty of the Seas

Royal Caribbean InternationalFrom a passenger: I was travelling with my family for the New Year holiday on the ship, departing Miami December 29. There were 10 other family members on board the ship with me. I was playing in the casino and got into an argument with some high rollers in the casino on the departing night, Saturday (12/29). There was no physical altercation just an argument. Security broke up the argument and I was asked to leave the casino and went back to my cabin around 1:30am. The high roller threatened me and a security guard was placed outside my cabin overnight. The next day I was called by Guest Relations around 9:45pm and was told to meet Security in the back room at the front desk at 7:00 am Monday, which was the first port of call. There were several gentlemen present at the meeting (head of security, guest relations) and I was told that I have 45 minutes to pack my bags and get off the ship and that I was a security risk to the ship. I packed my bags and was escorted to the dining room. In the dining room there were immigration officials who had to approve of my disembarkation. Although I objected to being thrown off the ship and although the immigration officials also didn't approve of my being thrown off the ship, officials from the cruise line handed an envelope with $1,000 cash in it to the immigration official and I was then escorted off the ship to a small boat then transferred to Labadee (private reserve on the island of Haiti). I was put in a golf cart and driven to the end of a fenced in area to a waiting jeep. Inside the jeep were machine gun armed guards and the driver. I was driven from a locked compound in Labadee, Haiti to a run down deserted landing strip where there was a turbo propeller plane waiting for me. On the ride to the landing strip I was advised to duck down for my safety. I was scared for my life and thought I was going to die. I was then escorted onto the turbo prop and was flown from Haiti to Fort Lauderdale, taking 3 hours. I then transferred onto a commercial airliner at my cost and arrived home Monday night. FYI, Haiti is listed on the US State Departments list of countries for Americans to avoid. NOTE: According to posters at Cruise Critic, a similar offloading of passengers at Labadee (from Gandeur of the Seas) occurred in November 2007. And in December (ship unknown) a couple was offloaded in the Bahamas -- the male passenger complained about cold overcooked fish and was offered a cocktail and another meal; he then received another cold piece of fish and a bill for the cocktail. He became indignant and probably boisterous and when security showed up he was manhandled and ended up being put ashore in the Bahamas along with his partner.<FONT size=-1>

A few years back on my first cruise, we were on the Norwegian Spirit out of NYC during spring break. There was a group of college age guys in the casino acting like jerks. They were saying inappropriate things to the cocktail waitresses, getting a bit too touchy with them and then later on were running up and down the halls banging on doors. Well, when we stopped in Nassua the next day we saw about 10 on them on the pier with thier luggage and a couple of them were crying into thier cell phones about being kicked off the ship and having no money. I think they got what they deserved, they didnt know how to act like humans and hopefully will never act that way again.

it seems like there is a good chance that there is more to this story than what's in that little blurb...

The first thing that hit me was how calm the story teller was, I would bet my last dollar that that wasn't the case on the ship and there is so much more and of course he is going to make himself out to be the wronged party.

College boys are the demographic I most dislike. Of course this bias started in college

When I hear stories like this, I take them as just that, stories. When people are upset, they tend to see things in a very one-sided, self-interested manner. This sounds a bit absurd to me, when according to the poster he did nothing wrong and the other party threatened him. Yet he gets security outside of his door, and he gets put off the ship? I just think we've gotten maybe 10% of what really happened, and the other 90% may explain a lot.

Kinda reminds me of the dreaded "Bear" saga of 2006 (or was it 2007, not sure??) Whatever, point is, people tend to see things differently, depending on their own roles in a situation. I've known families that sailed with Bears, no problems. I'v e been to Labadee, no problems.

And Labadee is great, by the way, I loved it there.

We also don't know what happened to the other guy in the argument. He could also have been thrown off but that might not have been known to this guy.

Yep, just a story.

But if the other guy went off then surely it would have been Labadee as well and if so, I cant see two seperate planes....

2. I think this is also a story but would love juicy details to add to it lol! We should get the sccop.

3. If the cash was in the envelope, how did he know $1000 was in it?Good point

Here's my other problem with this story: I love RCCL, but this line isn't where a true "high roller" would choose to sail, or gamble. RCCL is a low to mid priced line, for middle class cruisers, there are other lines priced to suit high rollers.

I spend every night of my cruise in the casino, and there are no real high rollers on RCCL-just little games to pass the time for fun. This isn't Indecent Proposal, Robert Redford isn't on the Liberty putting down a cool million on a crap roll-the tables are for the most part $100 and under-far from high roller status.

But you gotta love a great work of fiction!!:p

This was my first thoughts also. Been on numerous cruises on a variety of lines and never saw high rollers on them.

High rollers play high stakes this is usually in Las Veags not on a ship

Funny that was the first thing to jump out at me that in my mind discredited the OP. Someone taking a bribe would not likely be blatent about it showing it off...oh and by the way giving a bribe would be illegal for an american company.

Also, OP made it sound like he/she got a free flight to FLL, doubt that seriously (s)he would be out of pocket from where they were off-loaded from the ship. Once off-loaded and at the airport I doubt RCCL would really have much to say about where to fly.

Personally, my question is how the poster knew that $1000 was in the envelope. Even if it isn't sealed, how do you know how much currency is in there? Did they ask you to count it before they handed it over to officials as a bribe? The story just doesn't make sense.

Oh, and the "high rollers" bit. Ok, so the high roller threatens you, but then (by the fact of them being a high roller) is able to persuade the cruise line to put you off the ship instead of themself. Oh cry me a river...it stinks of a made up story.
