Budget Queen Posted December 24, 2011 #2 Share Posted December 24, 2011 If you want to see puffins, take the Gull Island boat tour. I am in Homer for days, with a rental car with my travels. You need to post the details, of the "tour" you are looking at- where it goes.
frugaltravel Posted December 24, 2011 #3 Share Posted December 24, 2011 You need to post the details, of the "tour" you are looking at- where it goes. So true. What might be "highlights' to one person are "lowlights" or "boring" to another :)
mapleleaves Posted December 25, 2011 #4 Share Posted December 25, 2011 There's plenty to see and do in Homer without booking an excursion through the ship. Depends on your interests and activity level. (send for Homer's free visitor guide) http://www.homeralaska.org/visitHomer/index.htm The Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies and the Islands & Oceans Visitor Center have some interesting activities and hikes. Some for $5. And if you have kids there's a Jr Biologist Program.
Northern Aurora Posted December 25, 2011 #5 Share Posted December 25, 2011 The Pratt Museum in Homer is rather nice. Homer is an "arty" community with nice shops and several galleries. I particularly like some of the quirky shops on the spit. There are also a couple of nice restaurants on the spit. And, on a nice day, taking the ferry (the Kachemak Voyager) over and back to Seldovia is a great way to spend a day. A nice day, or several days, can be spent in Homer without taking any type of formal "excursion."
Budget Queen Posted December 25, 2011 #6 Share Posted December 25, 2011 Homer does put together an informative visitor guide. Request a copy. All is well and good, for touring on your own, very simple, BUT the big problem is no car, with the OP, which just about shuts out plenty and gives far less options. The sea, is certainly a highlight, so it needs to be decided what is of the most priority in their "too" short time.
picture Posted December 26, 2011 Author #7 Share Posted December 26, 2011 Thanks for all the information. The tour that indicated "highlights" drove down the Home Spit, to Pratt Museum, Stop @ Baycrestt Hill, & Islands & Oceans Visitor Center.
