  1. Everyone so far has offered pretty much the same advice. I agree with the approach if you want a specific cruise/date and even more so if you are very particular about you cabin. We take a different approach for most of our Caribbean cruises. We book after final payment date and often weeks (occasionally days) before sailing. To make this work, we are flexible. We are ok with several cruise lines, four different Florida departure ports, and a variety of itineraries. We are often somewhat flexible with sail dates in a 2-3 week range. On some ships and cabin classes we will book a guarantee and others we want to choose our cabin. This approach often gets us a great deal. Before we lived in Florida, we sometimes followed a similar, but more restrictive approach because last minute airfare could eat up lots of the cruise savings. We would pick a week and book a round trip flight to Ft. Lauderdale. Then we would hold off booking the cruise (RT Ft. Lauderdale or Miami) until after final payment date. We always got a good deal, but never as good as some of the ones we have using the first approach. Of course in situations where we do not have the flexibility, we book as soon as we decide on a cruise, and we monitor the prices like everyone else suggests.
  2. I looked at (but did not buy) this plan more than a year ago. I was intrigued because it took a different approach to annual trip insurance than all of the other plans I had seen. You pay an low annual premium ($94 per person) for the base plan. You can then add on optional trip specific coverage, for any or all of your trips. The base coverage includes such things as: Trip Delay, Missed Tour or Cruise Connection, Medical Evacuation and Repatriation of Remains, Political or Security Evacuation, Natural Disaster Evacuation, Baggage & Personal Effects, Baggage Delay, Medical Expense and Accident Death/Dismemberment. Optional coverages for each trip include: Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, Cancel for Any Reason and Rental Car Damage/Theft. A key piece of the base coverage is $100K per trip for medical. The medical coverage appears to be primary and it looks like you can get a waiver of the pre-existing conditions clause, although it is unclear to me exactly when you must purchase the plan. Either way, the medical coverage is better than what I have seen in any other annual comprehensive travel insurance policy. After pricing out the optional trip specific coverage, my conclusion was the plan was not worth it if you intend to purchase cancelation/interruption coverage for each trip. For me, the trip add-ons cost about the same as a good single trip plan with somewhat less coverage. Sometimes it cost a few dollars more and sometimes it was a little less. Why not save the annual premium and just purchase trip specific plans which have better coverage? At least, go through a mock booking of sample trips to see pricing for your ages and typical trips. If the intent is to keep the base plan (for some decent benefits) and only add cancelation/interruption coverage for some trips, then this plan might be a good deal. I was able to see an August 2021 sample policy, but I have not seen anything since then. The coverage information on the web site seems to be the same, but some details may have changed. I never priced CFAR or rental car insurance, so I am not sure how competitive this policy might be for those coverages.
  3. Not quite to the bolded text. An enhanced driver license provides proof of US citizenship. A REAL ID does not. It is available to both citizens and non-citizens. A birth certificate is just one of several options a US citizen can use for primary identification when applying for a REAL ID. Non-citizens have different options. That's why your grandson still needs to bring proof of citizenship for a closed loop cruise. If it is not a closed loop cruise, he will need a passport.

  5. I looked a little further and tried to do a mock purchase. Yes indeed, you must be a member and you have to purchase your trip through them. Also, I missed the rental car coverage is an optional add on. The price is reasonable, but you must pay for it if you want it. I agree from everything I have seen it is a good value for older cruisers who purchased their trip through the big box store. It is also appears to be a good value for anyone who wants the 50% CFAR coverage or who sees benefit in the hospital of choice for medical evacuation. I am still not sure that I have not overlooked something. If not, I am very impressed with the coverage.
  6. I looked briefly at the policy (at least the one for Florida) and it seems to provide everything you say, and more. I was able to get a quote starting at https://www.costcotravel.com/Info/Travel-Insurance. There was no requirement that I had to purchase the trip from the big box store. I picked the cruise quote and it never asked about age. I hope some of the regular posters on this forum can do the same and see if they can find some significant "gotchas" that I missed. Besides the price and no age dependency, here are some of the positives I saw. Good coverage amounts across the board. 100% Trip Cancelation and 150% Trip Interruption $200K medical, $1 million evacuation and $15K medical/hospital guarantee Medical evacuation to a hospital of your choice (assuming you meet criteria) Typical covered reasons for cancelation but also includes CFAR at 50% up to $10K $2K Trip delay Rental car damage coverage Waiver of pre-existing conditions if purchased within 21 days of initial trip deposit Primary coverage (at least I can't find any of the typical language that indicates secondary) Like you, I started looking for the catch because it seems too good to be true. So far, I have not found the catch.
  7. Be careful if you are considering an annual comprehensive travel insurance plan. While they definitely can be a lot cheaper than purchasing multiple individual plans, the coverage is not the same. For many people they are not worth it. It all depends on your individual situation and risk tolerance. If you already have good foreign emergency medical coverage, take several inexpensive trips per year and have no pre-existing conditions (as defined in the policy), then either of the two Nationwide policies mentioned above could be a good value. If not, be sure you understand everything. Here are some of the limitations for the Nationwide Travel Pro and Travel Plus Plans Maximum available trip cancelation/interruption combined benefit is $10K per year. This is the total for all people on the policy combined. If you max out early in the year, you can't add more coverage. Maximum medical is $10K per person, per trip. Way too low in my opinion, unless you already have good coverage and only need this plan to cover deductibles and co-pays. Medical coverage is secondary to your existing home medical coverage. Sometimes this is important and other times it can just be an inconvenience. It depends on you regular medical insurance. Pre-existing conditions are subject to a 90 day lookback period. No waiver of pre-existing conditions is available. Most losses caused by or resulting from pre-existing conditions are excluded. Make sure you understand the definition of a pre-existing condition for travel insurance in case it could apply to you. Medical Evacuation is $50K per person, per trip. If all of your trips are to the Caribbean, this amount is adequate. But still read the rules and limitations. Unfortunately most single trip policies have similar rules. Travel insurance is more complicated than it should be. As others have suggested, speaking with a knowledgeable broker can help you gat the best policy for your personal situation.

  9. I put a link in post 51. Again, this is a policy underwritten by Nationwide with some non-insurance benefits provided by Carnival. Aon Affinity is the administrator for both parts of the plan. The distinction may or may not matter in your case, but if you need to get your state insurance commission involved, they will usually not touch the non-insurance portion. https://affinitytravelcert.com/document/pdfs/CCL_Landing.html Scroll down to the bottom and select your state. Then click on the Download button.
  10. @klfrodo's response is correct if you have already made your final cruise payment. But if you have not, then you may have an option. Most of the plans sold by the cruise lines allow you to purchase their policies up until final payment. Unless it is on Holland America, the CFAR policies from the cruise lines will give you a 75-100% cruise credit for the non refundable portion of your cruise fare. This will not help with airfare or any pre/post stays on your own, but it may be attractive to you. The medical coverage on the cruise line plans is minimal, so keeping your medical plan in addition to a cruise line plan is not a bad idea, even if you could cancel the policy or use it on a future trip.
  11. If indeed you booked and paid for the Carnival Protection Plan in advance of your symptoms/diagnosis AND you had nothing else that would meet the definition of pre-existing condition when you purchased the plan, please ignore my previous post. You need to continue to pursue/fight with AON to at least get a reason for the small reimbursement. If the denial is indeed accurate, they should still provide the CFAR benefit. @skrufy You originally said you submitted a "medical claim". I have assumed you submitted a "trip cancelation claim" for medical reasons. If not, please explain and maybe you will get some additional advice. Good luck.
  12. Unfortunately this is probably what happened. Carnival's Vacation Protection Plan will not pay most benefits (including cancelation, interruption, medical and evac) if it was due to a pre-existing condition. Unlike many third party plans, Carnival does not offer a waiver of the pre-existing conditions clause if you purchase within XX days of your first deposit. Here is Carnival's definition. It is similar to the generic one provided by another poster (#21) who really understands this stuff: Pre-Existing Condition means any injury, sickness or condition of Yours, Your Traveling Companion and/or Your Family Member booked to travel with You for which within the sixty (60) day period prior to the Effective Date of Trip Cancellation coverage under this Policy (a) first manifested itself or exhibited symptoms which would have caused one to seek diagnosis, care or treatment; (b) required taking prescribed drugs or medicine, unless the condition for which the prescribed drug or medicine is taken remains controlled without any change in the required prescription; or (c) required medical treatment or treatment was recommended by a Physician. The good news is assuming you followed the procedures for canceling your trip, you most likely will qualify for CFAR (75% future cruise credit) for the non-refundable (taxes and fees) portion of your cruise fare. Here are specifics: Vacation Protection “ANY REASON” Cruise Credits......Up to 75% of the non-refundable prepaid Cruise Vacation Cost Provided by Carnival Cruise Line In the event that you choose to cancel for a reason not authorized above or for a reason that is otherwise restricted, at any time up until departure, and you have purchased Vacation Protection, Carnival Cruise Line will provide you a cruise credit equal to 75% of the non-refundable value of your cruise vacation prepaid to Carnival Cruise Line, for your use toward a future cruise. This additional enhancement is offered by Carnival Cruise Line as a special service to guests that purchase this ticket contract Cancellation Fee Waiver Program Addendum and is available only if purchased prior to final payment (for the cruise vacation). Certain restrictions on the use of these cruise credits (such as blackout periods) may apply. To be eligible for credits, notification of cancellation must be given to Carnival Cruise Line prior to the ship’s departure. Once you’ve cancelled with Carnival Cruise Line, please contact the Program Administrator at 1-800-331-2796 regarding cruise credits. Here is a link to download a sample policy: https://affinitytravelcert.com/document/pdfs/CCL_Landing.html Scroll down to the bottom and select your state. Then click on the Download button.
  13. That video probably adds more confusion than help. It said despite what is on the sign in the splash zone, the video poster was told that children in swim nappies could use use it. She promised to confirm with P&O and post their response in the YouTube comments section. So far it has been more than a year, and no follow-up has been posted. The pertinent section runs from 2:10 to 3:02.

  17. If that is the way it came across, I apologize because that was not my intent. I do not recommend a comprehensive annual travel insurance plan for the majority of people. The biggest faults I have with these plans are limitations in their medical coverage. Too little is my biggest issue, but secondary vs primary, and handling of pre-existing conditions can be a concern. But if you already have good medical coverage outside of the US, then the limitations won't matter. Another concern is the limited annual cancelation and interruption benefit. 15K/year is the most I have seen, and the average is a lot less. But if you tend to take a lot of relatively inexpensive trips, this limitation may not matter to you either. So the only way I would consider an annual comprehensive travel plan is if: you already have good medical coverage outside of the US, and you tend to take a lot of relatively inexpensive trips (even if the total cost of the trips exceed the annual maximum benefit)
  18. As others have said, this can be much more complicated than you want it to be or it should be. That said here are a few thoughts. First get a copy of your current credit card guide to benefits to make sure you actually have travel insurance benefits. If so, read it and make sure you pay special attention to pre-existing conditions, covered reasons for cancellation/interruption, and requirements to coverage. The Costco Anywhere Visa® Cards By Citi dropped the travel insurance benefit several years ago. So unless you have a different card, or you are grandfathered in, you may have no travel insurance benefit. Then call a good travel insurance broker such as TripInsuranceStore and ask them the question. They probably will not know much about your credit card, but that is why you need a copy of the benefits in front of you. Things that I would be concerned about include: All credit card insurance that I have seen exclude coverage for pre existing conditions for travelers and non-traveling family members with a minimum 60 day lookback period. Most third party policies do not include non-traveling family members and you can often gat a waiver of pre-existing conditions. Just be sure you understand exactly what this means. Many, but not all, third party policies require you insure the full non-refundable cost of your trip in order to waive the pre-existing conditions exclusion. If pre-existing conditions might be an issue, then choices of third party policies are much more limited. Most credit card coverage is secondary to any other insurance. Some third party plans are also worded like this. I can see one insurance company not wanting to consider a claim until they can see what the other one has paid. If both insurers take the same position I have no idea how you resolve it. The list of covered reasons for most credit card coverage is shorter than ones on most third party plans. Make sure you understand the differences and are you comfortable with those differences. Credit cards offer very minimal or no medical and medical evacuation coverage. Unless you already have good foreign travel coverage, make sure the third party plan will give you the needed coverage and you meet their requirements. This is another area where some plans may want you to insure the full trip cost. There are probably more potential issues, which is why a good broker can be invaluable. Good luck and let us know your end result.
  19. OP here. I just wanted to follow up with the end result. The Crown Grill credit card charge remained pending for several days. The reservation stayed missing from the Android app, iPhone app and the web app. I called Princess and they saw no Crown Grill reservation for me, but the person I spoke with did not have access to the pending charge info. He made me another Crown Grill reservation and I was charged once again. He said the initial pending charge should eventually disappear, but if not to call back and they would fix it. Both pending credit card charges remained for several days. As of today the initial pending charge is gone, the second charge (correctly) went through and the dinner reservation currently appears on all of the apps. I am still not sure what happened, but everything is back the way it should be.
  20. My point is no Medicare Supplement has language similar to "if you are traveling outside the U.S. or its territories, your supplement becomes your primary coverage". So no help for the OP. If someone has coverage different than Medicare with a Supplement, then by all means they should check their existing plan before purchasing travel medical insurance. I have seen a lot of employer sponsored plans for retirees (especially from government employers including military) that offer much better foreign travel coverage than a Medicare Supplement. Some Medicare Advantage plans also provide minimal to excellent foreign travel coverage, but the terms and conditions vary widely as they are not standardized like the Medicare Supplements.
  21. TRICARE For Life works exactly the way you describe, but even though you may think of it as "Supplemental to Medicare", it is not a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy. (In a few situations such as this, it is better than a Medicare Supplement.) Medicare Supplements are different and you will not find that wording in any of them. They are regulated by law and all plans (of the same letter) provide exactly the same coverage, from all providers. Medigap Plans C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, M or N: Covers foreign travel emergency care if it begins during the first 60 days of your trip, and if Medicare doesn't otherwise cover the care. Pays 80% of the billed charges for certain medically necessary emergency care outside the U.S. after you meet a $250 deductible for the year. Foreign travel emergency coverage with Medigap policies has a lifetime limit of $50,000. ** The only exception is if you live in one of three states (MA, MN, WI) that have there own plans. All 3 states offer plans with foreign emergency travel and the terms are at least as good or better than the plans in the rest of the states. ----------------------------------------------------------------- I'm probably too late for the OP, but Medicare (with or without a supplement) is considered a primary plan for GeoBlue elegibility. GeoBlue will process and pay claims as the primary payor! While they reserve the right, to contact your primary insurance company to coordinate benefits, I have not seen that happen in my limited experience. I have seen posts on these boards that all say the same thing and Steve at TripInsuranceStore, has told me he has never seen coordination of benefits. If GeoBlue ever coordinates with my supplement, it will use up some of my $50K lifetime maximum and I will rethink my foreign medical insurance in the future.
  22. I just booked a cruise this morning.. I was able to find an acceptable date and time for the Crown Grill, so I reserved it using the MedallionClass app. My credit card was charged immediately and the reservation initially appeared in the Dine My Way section of the app. Now the app shows no record of the reservation, but it will let me book the MDR (or Sabbatinis) for the same day. So do I have a CG reservation and how do I prove it when I get on the ship. All I can show is a credit card charge from "PRINCESS CRUISES PASSA" for $78.
  23. That photo was definitely not taken at Maya Chan. I have been there too many times to know the background looks nothing like it. It is definitely possible that someone would see that amount of sargassum at Maya Chan, at least before they began raking for the day. Unfortunately you can find similar sargassum photos in many places today. Here are a few photos from locations near me in Palm Beach County, Florida. It is not always like this, but it can be and the problem seems to be getting worse..
