We have a Harmony of the Seas cruise booked for Feb. 8, 2020.  This will be our first time RCCL.  I'm also someone who is not willing to check to check the NCL website more than once a week.  Should I try booking shows by looking at the website right after final payment, which I believe is about 90 days before the cruise?

For NCL they give you an exact number of days when you can book reservations; Disney gives you an exact number of days before you can book fastpasses; etc. but I heard that RCCL has an arbitrary system (from other posters and no exact date offered from RCCL reps either).  Appreciate your input about how far away from sailing you would suggest I start checking.

Unfortunately you will have to continually check as there is no specific time frame of them showing up.  If you sign up for your roll call, you'll have more eyes on the lookout.

Is that the rule now that everyone in the cabin must buy a drink package?  I was planning on buying the refreshment package for my daughter (one cabin) and also for hubby and son in the second cabin.  I've been waiting for a price drop, instead the damn thing went up by $6.!!  I was having trouble justifying the cost … but no way does the increased price make sense.  At this price, I may just buy it for DH only and will just limit the kids to one mocktail each day (assuming I can just buy it for one person).

It does not apply to non alcoholic packages

You can (if you have a credit card) get cash on it at guest services or at the ATM if you want to take cash ashore.

Although it is an option dont ever take out cash on a credit card. You'll pay the cash advance fee, plus you accrue more fees UNTIL you've completely paid the statement balance in full for 2 consecutive months.  Not a good option if you're on a budget and unable to do that.

Just use a credit card and make it easy for everyone including yourself...

It's definitely easier but maybe OP only has a debit card or doesn't have a credit card.

Can I order 8 or 12 bottles of water before I board the ship so it's in my room when I arrive or do I need to wait till I am on the ship?

To answer your question, yes you can purchase before boarding but the less expensive option would be just to carry them on since you can have up to 12 bottles per stateroom.  If you were already on-board and had no other purchasing options, I would understand, but $39 seems a lot for 12 bottles of water when you can buy a case for $5 before boarding

With a cash account they are limited to $500 in spending before they are cut off.  We don’t know how much their friend is able to spend.

True...i was thinking OP thought she might rack up $1000 in Promenade shopping.  I've had to make online payments mid cruise, while at a port if call, to cover charges on my account; so I get her stress level.

But it is not a requirement.  Until the account approaches $500, she will not have to do anything.  (until the end of the cruise when it must be paid in full)

For normal situations not a requirement, but she is trying to figure out a way to circumvent any extra charges outside of the amount the 17 year old has enough money to cover; not so much of how to use a cash account.  At the end of the cruise would have been too late.

No that's not the problem.  My concern was that they inadvertently exceed the amount that we pre-purchase and they just keep playing and the amounts are just tacked onto the account.  I was not aware that you had to take your card to a machine to purchase more credits.  They are responsible enough not to abuse that.  That will work for us then.

Here is the fine print when pre-purchasing arcade credits:

To redeem the Arcade Credits, Guest must visit Arcade on first day of cruise and present confirmation letter found in stateroom. Guest will not be notified once Arcade Credits are depleted; additional arcade play will be charged to guest’s Seapass at current onboard prices. Cancellations will be refunded as onboard credit for the pro-rated balance of Purchase Price, and any arcade credits used prior to cancellation will be offset as a charge on guest’s folio. Offer is not transferable, not redeemable for cash, and for arcade-use only; credit expires end of sailing.

What about getting her a prepaid visa with cash dad wants to give her. Does anyone know how that would work.

Good thought.  If the ship takes Amex I recommend getting her a Serve prepaid card.  It takes a few times to master using it but the parents can transfer money from their bank using a debit card (no fee) or credit card (CC transfer fee) and it's instantaneous.  I was trying to think of an option for my daughter (15 years old at the time) to have money when going to the mall or wherever without me having to worry about how to get cash to her.  Prepaid cards usually have a fee when purchasing while Amex Serve is $1 a month and the fee is usually waived if it's being used.  We were also able to utilize it on her high school trip to Europe, just in case she ran out of cash.  I've also set one up for my 13 year old and works great.  She just took an 8th grade trip a few days ago and we didn't have to worry about giving too much money, her losing any, or spending an excessive of amount.

Just realized OP is leaving tomorrow so getting the Serve card isn't an option this time around but at least you have the info.
