Was the panorama excursion the included excursion, I assume?

Yes, the Puntarenas Panorama excursion was the included excursion at Puntarenas (Puerto Caldera), Costa Rica.  While https://kolbsontheroad.blogspot.com/ didn't have a favorable review of the Panorama excursion... apparently due to the transport to and from...
https://roseandtedsexcellentadventure.com/ and others on FaceBook seemed to have enjoyed this included excursion.

I see that the review of the Puntarenas Panorama wasn’t favorable [per Garry’s blog], so I was wondering if others might chime in as to their reviews of the other Puntarenas (Puerto Caldera), Costa Rica excursions which were offered:

    • Jungle Boat & Crocodile Safari
    • A Walk in The Clouds
    • Andalusian Horse Show
    • The Story of Starbucks Coffee from Field to Cup
    • Eco-Bike Adventure

DH and I used to live in downtown Seattle (2nd & Vine in Belltown)

What a small world.  DW used to live on Queen Anne hill before we were married.  back in the late 80's or early 90's we used to occasionally go to a restaurant/ bar right about 2nd & Vine named "Two Dagos from Texas" which was owned by two brothers of Italian descent.  One brother was the chef and the other was more of the business manager.  GREAT food!  But sadly they moved on.

We're looking forward to meeting you in person once we board in LA.

@onlyslightlymad and @larry1365FYI... I noticed that @Aquadesiac posted the revised itinerary on her Round The World Writer blog.  This will be a useful link to share with your non-CC member friends and family, plus she is an excellent writer and I enjoy reading her unique spin on the 21/22 Viking World Cruise; I think you will too.

Yes. Going to be an avid lurker. We were on the 2018 Inaugural WC.

Want to see where you go and how far. Have friends who were going to get on in LA and cancelled Tuesday. They were using funds rebated from the 2019 WC that only got as far as Dubai.

Have there been itinerary changes announced for once you leave LA?

I may be missing something.  If one's phone supports WiFi calling, why not just use the phone's native message app in airplane mode?

I would think the same, but it may depend on how the carrier processes the call.  I have yet to follow up with my carrier (Verizon), but I came across this comments in there FAQ section for their TravelPass international travel plan offering.

    https://www.verizon.com/plans/international/international-travel/travel-pass/

Q: Can I use Wi-Fi calling with TravelPass?
    A: Wi-Fi calling isn't included with TravelPass.
Wi-Fi calling to a country other than the US is charged international long distance rates regardless of whether or not you have an international travel plan.

So sometime over the next month I plan on following up with them to better understand their charging policy and how this might apply to third party applications such WhatsApp and Signal.

    Hi all,

I have searched for this answer, but can't find a recent one. What is the wifi policy and how good is coverage on the ship? Will my husband and I be able to text each other while on the ship, do they have the silly one device rule?

    @khuselid,

@TayanaLorna provided responded to a similar question under a related topic where her response was: #2. "It's one device per person per cabin.  So if you want to use Wifi on your tablet or laptop, you need to disconnect your phone from it."

Additionally, in My Viking Journey, within the ONBOARD EXPERIENCE section under Stateroom Services, there are the following comments regarding the internet service which you might find of interest:

    Internet Access

All the ships offer free Wi-Fi. You may use your personal device or one of the ship’s computers in our Business Center on Deck 1. Our connection relies on a VSAT satellite terminal—the best possible solution for ocean cruising. Due to the nature of data bandwidth and latency, as well as potential interruptions in satellite signals based on terrain and weather, you may experience slower online connections than you are accustomed to at home. In order to ensure fair usage for all, we reserve the right to limit heavy-bandwidth applications, downloads or software upgrades so that all our guests have access to Wi-Fi. We suggest that guests limit large uploads/downloads and live streaming. Please download your content prior to your cruise, as bandwidth will affect your service and cannot be guaranteed. We would be pleased to help you with your device settings once you are on board. We hope you will understand that we will do our very best to provide you with an enjoyable online experience, and remember you will likely be able to access standard Wi-Fi and data roaming services on shore in most towns and cities you visit.

I've also seen bits and pieces in various CC Boards regarding the WiFi service.  NY Nick had some comments you might find useful in this post: #382

Can you use Wi-Fi data on your cell phone on the ship to make local and international calls, without being charged roaming rates?

    2 hours ago, JeriGail said:

You can if you have an app that lets you made calls over Wi Fi.  Search for "android wifi calling app" or "iphone wifi calling app" to find your options.  These apps will often also let you text over Wi Fi too.

    2 hours ago, Squawkman said:

If you have AT&T, WiFi calling is included. Just be sure to turn it on in the MyAT&T app. It may be turned on in iOS settings as well.

    2 hours ago, DrKoob said:

If you are lucky enough to have T-Mobile you can make calls and use data for free all over Europe with or without WiFi. If you have an iPhone you can always FaceTime and use audio only. You can now do that to android phones as well.

It would be GREAT if we can get guidance on specific cell phone settings for each of the major carriers (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon) to avoid roaming or inadvertent international calling costs during a Viking Ocean voyage.  I know that I've seen some comments on the use of FaceTime, WhatsApp (#409) and FB Messenger as WiFi alternatives, but I'm more concerned at this time about the settings to avoid cellular charges.  I have an iPhone and use Verizon as a carrier.  Since we will be on a world cruise, I anticipate there may be different approaches for those traveling in SE Asia versus the Mediterranean or the Baltic areas.  With all of the experienced cruisers here on the CC board, I'm sure that there is lots of accumulated knowledge to be shared.  I appreciate others' recommendations and guidance.

    From Coffee to Storage

First I would like to thank you all for so many helpful tips!  I have spent most of my free time over the past few weeks reading 59 pages of great info.

We are taking our first VO cruise in January.  We are planning on using luggage direct to ship a large suitcase.  Can anyone tell me if there is sufficient room under the bed to stash the suitcase-or any other hints on where we can store it for our 30 day cruise.

    Thanks-Kim

    Per 2021/22 WC board:

@Jazmyn49 #1121 "We have been on 2 World Cruises and find there is plenty of room under the bed.  We do put our carry on inside a bigger suitcase but that's just for our convenience.  Other posts have given dimensions."

@Redwarrior68 #1123 "From the floor to the bottom of the king bed is 11 3/4 inches.  We put 4 large and 2 medium size suitcases under the bed."

Have tried searching both the Viking website and here and can't find a phone number for the ship (Orion) in case someone needs to reach us in an emergency.  Anybody??

It will be provided in your cruise docs which will be e-mailed to you about 2 week prior to departure.

Thank you Zelker for asking the question and thank you Peregrina651 for the response.  In registering travel plans in the STEP Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (https://step.state.gov) amongst the information requested is:

“* Please provide at least one complete address and/or phone number where the U.S. Embassy can reach you while traveling abroad in the case of an emergency.”

So I too was trying to figure out emergency contact information while on the ship because I’m not sure my cell phone will be functional. Although I will be on the Viking Star rather than the Orion.

From a June 18, 2019 post associated with the Viking 19/20 World Cruise: #397, so the prices are likely out of date, but it gives you an idea of some of the services offered.

    Prices are as follows.

    Women’s - mani &59/pedi $69/

wash, cut, blow dry $75 - $80 - $85 (depending on hair length)

    Men’s - mani $35/pedi $69

    haircut - $39

Just curious -- I am a solo traveler and wonder if Viking has a meet and greet or social hour for solos, to get to know one another.

See post #1272 for a summary of comments from Viking when a similar "solos" question was raised for the World Cruise.  I'd assume they do something similar for the other VO cruises, but others might be better able to respond.

I just booked my first Viking cruise on the Orion in November this year from FLL to LA via the Panama Canal.  This topic may have already been discussed, but I just don't want to read 50 some pages to find out!  I will be sailing solo.  What kinds of programs does Viking have for solos?  Will solos be able to dine together during Covid?

    Thanks,

    Kathy

In the 9/1/21 Viking TV broadcast about the Viking World Cruises there was a specific question and response related to solo travelers.  My recollection was that for the longer World Cruise segments they assign a crew member (Assistant Cruise Director of entertainer) to help ensure the solo travelers don't feel alienated: they coordinate a meet and greet session for the solo travelers, coordinate some events for the solos, and reserve dining spots so that solo travelers aren't dining alone.  While the video is 1: 23:11 long, the question on solo travers was several questions into the Q&A section starting and can be found at 1:12:45. Very entertaining video filled with useful information.  https://youtu.be/vm7owkYAHvM

Welcome to the Viking Ocean Board.

    1) We also book a DV4 and have never had a problem booking our preferred optional Shore-ex. Even if it shows as full online, once you get aboard, the Shore-ex staff are amazing. If possible, they can arrange additional tours, or they may receive cancellations.

Personally, if Viking don't put on extra tours, I will find a private operator.

    2) Taking a Viking Shore-ex is no guarantee that if the tour returns rather late, that the vessel will definitely wait. The Master will endeavour to delay departure for the return of all tours, but if operational issues such as tides/weather/ship's speed/pilots, etc arise, the Master could be forced to sail. However, on a Viking shore-ex, if you miss the ship, Viking is responsible for getting you to the next port.

With an abundance of cheap flights, trains, ferries and hire cars, it is easy to travel between most ports.

Eggtuary, Heidi13 has also offered some guidance regarding private excursions in the 17 Sept 2020 #229 & #230 posts on 2022 Viking Star World Cruise Roll Call and some more thoughts in the 24 April 2021 #1379 post on Dec 22, 2022 World Cruise Roll Call which might be of interest to you:
