  1. Not common in the U.S. there are ‘cancel for no reason׳ policies but they are extremely expensive.
  2. That sounds like a good strategy with one caveat to consider. Travel insurance does not typically cover ‘cancel for no reason’. There are generally pretty strict guidelines about what it will or will not cover. If that’s not a concern, then this makes perfect sense.
  3. Unfortunately, that’s just the way it is. I guess Silversea can choose to price their products any way that they want to. For some reason, they seem to ‘like’ D2D with or without air and ground more than P2P. I wish the pricing was a little different. We always choose D2D without flights and ground. It works better for us, even if it ends of costing more. But everyone needs to make the best choice for themselves. So what works for us may not work for someone else. Totally understandable.
  4. It would still be door to door. Just without flights and you can replace the ground with a credit as well.
  5. You can always choose door to door and take a credit for transportation. We always do that because we prefer to book/manage our own ground and air transportation.
  6. You and I may be the only people who have actually read the contract. Once i read it, and realized the actual limits of Silversea’s obligations , I felt much better about booking D2D, taking the air and ground credits, and booking the air and ground myself with at least a 2 day cushion.
  7. The suite upgrade doesn’t work the way it sounds it works. What it means is that if you book, for example, a Deluxe Veranda suite, it is priced at the cost of a standard Veranda suite. Whether this is what is actually the case or not, I do not know. I haven’t tried to do any actual calculations.
  8. Just my opinion. come back to the ship. Wash your face. Comb your hair. Forget about makeup. Put on pants. Decent shirt. Go enjoy dinner wherever you want. In my experience, there is a huge range of clothes that people wear to casual, informal, and formal. And, in the end, it’s all less important than it sounds.
  9. Sorry I wasn’t clear. I meant that the issues should have been urgently addressed and resolved by Silversea from the get-go. Not you.
  10. Did you speak directly to Michelle about this situation, which, by the way, sounds like a mess. It should be addressed and resolved from the get-go, not after you’ve been living with it for days.
  11. I love the Cloud. If you’re having problems, forget about Reception. They tend to be rather useless. Instead, go talk to the Hotel Director, Michelle Roberts. She is one of my very favorite Silversea people and a very good problem solver.
  12. Did you check LaGuardia or Newark? LaGuardia is easy to get to. There might be a shuttle to Newark from JFK.
  13. of course! There are thousands of Silversea guests over the course of a year and I’m sure that the vast majority get on the boat, do their thing, get off and don’t participate in any CC or other forums. Always good to remember that these forums don’t represent anything other than a fraction of the guests.
  14. Ah. Good old JFK. Departing is always a special experience. I don’t even know if they consider a 2 hour delay an actual delay. First you get to spend an inordinate amount of time on the Van Wyke wondering if you’ll ever get to JFK. And then you get there and you get to wonder if you’ll ever leave.
  15. There are many wonderful things about Silversea besides what you are wearing for dinner. We do everything possible to avoid checking luggage for all the same reasons you do. We bring clothes that are appropriate for dinner at a nice restaurant (my husband does bring a jacket but I think he ‘wears’ that on the plane) and we happily eat at the Grill or La Terrazza on formal nights and bypass the whole formal business. Some people do get all dressed up and some don’t. Don’t worry about it and you will be fine. I think the formal dress code business is going to quietly fade into the sunset over the next few years.
