It is not what they have or do not have.  Their job is not to look for blame but solve the problem.  Whatever cruise lines errors were early on and occurred at the same approximate time as political officials (high level officials) had just told the people of New York to continue to live their lives as normal.  If the CDC is focused on 8 months ago, we are all lost if left to them.  Utter, dismal failure.  Miscommunications, change of advice in the same day and on and on.

8 months ago the infection rate was nothing compared to what it is now.  The hospitalization rate in NC has set a record the previous three days.  The positive rate at UNC hospital of all the tests today was 10% which is up significantly from the downward trend a few weeks prior.  The CDC is doing exactly what they should be doing by keeping people off of ships until the numbers and the vaccines are better and being administered.

Lol...I am not assuming anything other than "nobody knows anything" and "everything changes all the time". (Remember how I was flamed when I said "no August 2020 cruises"?)

Back in March they said "don't wear masks".....and then "wear masks" became the mantra.

Check back with me the week before the first American cruise sets sail...and we'll see what they want. With the current covid rates and thanks to the people who can't follow guidelines....I don't dare give a projection of when that will be.

Those same people are still out there flaming anyone that dares to type a realistic response on here.

...oh wait, they just announced two more levels, 5 - super high (we hate the cruise industry) and 6 - super duper really, really high (whatever it takes to keep people off the ships).

You would think people would want to stay off the boats because of the explosion in virus and the overloaded hospitals and refrigerator make shift morgues outside the hospitals.  I guess for some it takes a high level from the CDC.  It seems to me it is a perfect 10 of you shouldn't want to go on a bleeping ship right now.

Two at 95% effectiveness seems pretty close to working out  In the interim, they will be testing length of protection so we are covered there also...

This is assuming that Carnival will be able to make it until the vaccine clears things up.  I know it is your opinion that Carnival has unlimited money and no matter what happens could never go bankrupt.  I just am of the opinion that if it were me I would take the cash and not take my chances.  Am I allowed to have an opinion oh great one?   I don't think Carnival will go bankrupt in light of the vaccination mentioned above, but I would still take the bird in hand instead of the 1.5% under the bush.  At the end of the day, I don't even use credit cards.

The main reason is that I can get 1.5X value for them if I use them for a Carnival purchase over $1500, meaning $1200 would become $1800 if used to pay for a cruise + excursion instead of $1200 in other spending.

A bird in hand is worth two in the bush.  Is that right?  I guess you would have to change it to 1.5 in the bush.

I sort of feel like the real question is which companies will still be in business when we finally start sailing?

I have one of the Carnival credit cards and I have enough points saved up for a really nice cruise, but there’s this nagging voice in the back of my head that says I should just use them to pay my bills for a couple of months before Carnival goes belly up and those points mean nothing.

Could you use the points to pay some bills and take the money you would have used to pay the bills and put it in a money market until this thing blows over.  I guess if the points can only be used to buy a Carnival Cruise you need to pray to whomever it is you pray to that this vaccine works out.

I agree with you. I was just conveying  the point that bankruptcy is not a simple solution and creditors have the right to seize assets. It’s highly unlikely, but a creditor could seize all of Carnival’s ships    and start their own cruise line.

I don't think Bank of America knows much about running a cruise line.  Before some know it all comes in and says B of A is not a creditor, I was just using that as an example.

Two potential big issues with declaring bankruptcy. First, how many people will continue to book cruises after losing thousands of dollars on previously booked cruises. Second, and this was already mentioned, what if the creditors take ownership of the ships as payment for debt owed by Carnival. In this situation Carnival doesn’t have any ships left.

One thing all of these cruise companies have going for them is the creditors really don't want to own a bunch of billion dollar boats.  When you repossess a house you can just resell it and get some of your money back.  Not much of a market for billion dollar cruise ships.  They would get pennies on the dollar and take a serious bath on it.

Yup that is the same cdc, the one that if you or I did our jobs that poorly, we would be fired.  The same one that has vacillated on recommendations all the way down this slippery path, the same one who has made predictions of deaths from 50,000 to 2.5 million, the same one.... I could care less if they had our best interest in mind, they have been doing a terrible job.  If they do not recant (certainly would be another vacillation) on the no sail order, The industry will sail when the current blip subsides.  We all know of course that we are the brink of two of the four vaccines coming out this year!   More great news.  You will be on a cruise before you know it!

I fail to see how the CDC has done there job poorly.  They have given many recommendations that would have worked if they had been followed.  It seems to me the ones doing the poor job are the American people.  If they recant the no sail order then I will agree with you that they are doing a bad job, because anyone that creates a pathway for people to get on a cruise ship in a pandemic is doing a poor job and should be fired.

We're down to 54 days until our 14 day Journey's cruise outta Baltimore to Panama Canal. We know it ain't gonna happen, but still haven't heard anything from Carnival. How long before your sail date did you get notice of cancellation?

They like to wait until the very last minute to rake in as much money as they can before cancelling.  It has been the modus operandi from the beginning.

The solution is the solution, you can look for the good side or the dark side.  3 months ago it was a pipe dream, now we are talking about eradicated the worst disease in ten centuries, does not sound pessimistic to me.

Back in May 72% of adults said that they would get the vaccine.  That number was down to 51% in September.  That's not pessimistic that is realistic.

Because things are not mutually exclusive.  Treatment is def working and that front has the best outlook it has been.  That does not mean everyone is saved.  Having better successful treatment options does not mean that deaths stop.  Look at what is happening and be thankful.

I agree the treatment is working to make the mortality better, but with the number of new cases spiraling out of control the number of people dying really isn't going down that much.  There were close to 800 deaths yesterday.  Excuse me if I am not thankful for 797 deaths.  Being down to 797 deaths in a day doesn't mean it is now a good idea to cram a bunch of people on a boat.

I am an avid Carnival fan.  Have been on 23 cruises and all with Carnvial and I have 2 more booked.  The way things are going, however, I don't think there will be a Carnival if things don't change quickly and I doubt they will regardless of a future vacine.  If things get worse, Carnival will probably go under.  You just can't lose money like they are doing and survive.  With several fairly new ships around and a couple brand new ones, Carnival will dispose of them and a new company will be formed.  That's what happens in the business world and that makes financial sense.

Maybe the company will become "The New Carnival".  I really hate to say this but that's reality.  Got $1,300 in Carnival gift cards and that will turn to dust along with 2 deposits.  As for the future, will probably cruise again but have to see what new cruising will be like.  Doubt it will be the same and prices will certainly increase and I mean increase a lot.  Who would have ever thought this could happen?  Some will say I am a pessimist.  I would say realist.

I had this view six months ago and was lambasted for it.  Every time I make a realistic comment about the cruise industry I am reported to the powers that be.  I hope your realistic point of view is wrong because I love Carnival cruise line.  It has brought my family an immeasurable amount of joy.  As a realistic person I think your post is spot on.

How many people does it take for them to have had success?  All of them?  Which other part of our society is virus free?  Good deal on the casino rate....  The virus will continue until it does not anymore.  No politician or scientist has made any difference.  How we live our lives is what matters.  IF it stays for 10 years will you feel the same way about cruising?

Which other part of our society is contained on a ship for up to 7 days?
