Thoughts on Volendam for 45 day cruise
cruising sister replied to redcruzer's topic in Holland America Line
I am on the Volendam now for 94 days. Despite what others have posted she is in good shape. The food is good and the crew is great. She has been and will be in rough seas on this sailing and has handled it like any other ship I have been on. Unless it is an ocean liner any ship will feel the rough seas. -
I am currently on the Grand Australian cruise and have not needed local currency on the islands. They keep telling us we need it and brought people on board to exchange currency but once we got off the ship they wanted US dollars. I would not stress about it.

Good morning from the Volendam. A beautiful sunrise. We had a bit of a scare last night with a fire. The captain said it was either in the stack or a boiler. I guess we will find out today. We have a sea day today and arrive in Suva tomorrow. It has been a fun time.- 84 replies

The Fleet Report and Daily for Tuesday, January 16th, 2024

Good afternoon from the Volendam, I continue to have a good time on this long voyage. I am enjoying getting to know the dailyites on board. The food has been good and the ship is in good shape for her age. The weather in Kansas City has been awful so it seems it was a good year to leave for 3 months. @ottahand7 I am sorry you are ill. My niece who is an intensive care doc says one of the big illnesses that puts adults and especially seniors on ventilators is RSV. So watch your illness closely. You can get RSV repeatedly so every senior even those with no lung problems should get the vaccine. When I hear people say they don’t need to get it makes me crazy!! Take care and be safe in the storms.- 104 replies

Hello from the Volendam, It has been going very well. The food has been good, great lectures and nice people. I have enjoyed meeting the fellow Dailyites. Tomorrow is our first stop in Honolulu. I will celebrate divorce day. Not everyone has a happy and healthy marriage. My first husband was mentally ill and it was a very physical and mentally damaging relationship. It was a great day when that marriage ended. Prayers and well wishes. Have a great day.- 119 replies

The Fleet Report and Daily for Friday, January 5th, 2024

Good morning from sea, It is 5:57 AM by the ship clock but 8AM my body clock. I try to sleep in but I am having no luck. We had very rough seas the first day. I have no problem but I guess many did as the venues were empty. We had a huge turnout at the M&G. We will have a Daily meet up this afternoon. We had a block party yesterday and everyone was very nice and excited. Everyone is so well traveled I am the novice on my block. My favorite waiter from my Norway trip recognized me and came over and gave me a big hug. I have requested his table for the rest of the trip. I won’t eat until 7 but it will be worth it. We will see what activities they will have today. Many were canceled due to the weather. Everyone have a great day!- 84 replies

Good rainy morning in San Diego, I hope the rain stops before I walk across the street to board. My body is still on CST and I saw the Volendam come in this morning. So many of us are on various cruises to get away from the winter blahs. Prayers and well wishes. Have a great day- 80 replies

Good morning, It looks to be a beautiful morning. There are high surf warnings so I will need to stay out of the water! Haha. Tomorrow morning there will be rain. It may be a soggy walk to the Volendam. At least it is not far. We are planning a walk this morning and explore a bit. Prayers and well wishes. Have a great day.- 84 replies

Good morning from San Diego, We had about 17 people stop by from our roll call at the Wyndham. Some stayed to talk and othered just said hi. I met Susan and Caron and we are going in the hop on and hop off bus today. It is a bit chilly and I am glad I grabbed that jacket. I thought I heard sea gulls honking since we are on the water here but soon realized they were noise makers! It really wasn’t bad and I went right back to sleep. Everyone have a great New Years Day!

Actually yes and I worked with lots of patients who sent money home to help families and are working in poor conditions to do so. Using cell phones to communicate with their families is a real. We all saw the isolation with Covid 19 did to mental health. It is the same for them. Seriously people you need to not take this so personally.

I have read through the comments and all I can say is WOW! People are mean. Anyone who says they can just stay home and work if they don’t like it does not know what home is like. It is a great sacrifice to leave your family behind but they do it to give them a better life. It is not just on cruise ships it is in other places in the world that people work and send money for their families in the depressed countries. Wanting to give the crew free internet is not a crime against cruising. Lighten up.
