    Hi

We are booked on Quest August 6th departure from Reykjavik to Montreal. Can anyone who has done this trip suggest which Ship excursions are worth doing?  Particularly interested in the Ventures excursions especially for Lady Franklin Island, Monumental Island and Akpotok Island.

Also how easy is it to explore the various ports independently? Are there any ports where the Ships excursions are the best way to get around?

Not interested in kayaking or long walks.

Thank you to anyone who can offer assistance.

Hi Sandytiger, we are doing this as well.  I seem to remember Chairsin did this last year and wrote a great trip report which I plan to look for soon.

We are considering an 18 day cruise, during which there are 6 consecutive sea days. I wonder if Seabourn lay on any extra activities? The thought of the sea days is giving my hubby the heebeegeebees 😂

There are also Art  and Bridge lessons.  On our recent cruise Sophie organised "Baggo" competitions, Tug-of War between the various crew departments, sack races etc., etc..  It sometimes seemed the sea days were too busy (in a good way) there was so much to choose from.

It DOES help Dusko.  And your information was exactly what I needed to know about the warmer limits.  Based on your comments I WILL take some clothing for warmer weather as well as clothing for very cool weather.

But I still need to know HOW cool!

We did this trip last year and my husband found the jacket provided by Seabourn was too warm for him.  I wore mine occasionally, but certainly didn't need anything warmer.  Also, we ate outside all but one night, with the aid of heaters and blankets, it was very comfortable.

Can anybody explain what a referral coupon is, will it help when we go on our Seabourn cruise in the carribean commencing January 26th.

Yes, a referral coupon will give you an OBC of $400 USD, and the person who supplies you with it will also receive $400 when they sail next.  At the very top of this board there is a "Referral Coupon thread", there you will find someone with a coupon to give away.

  5. To be clear, we weren’t disappointed with this cruise at all, mainly because we had realistic expectations. We knew the weather was likely to be less than perfect (it was) so sea days relaxing by the pool weren’t possible. The deck repairs were an unexpected irritation but we understood that Seabourn had little alternative but to try and fix things during that crossing. The weather was such that almost nobody wanted to use the pool area anyway.

Otherwise we thoroughly enjoyed the cruise. We’ve done several trips which are technically “repositioning” and we choose them specifically because they include plenty of our beloved sea days which are the whole point of cruising for us. We’ve never noticed a deterioration in service, food or anything else for that matter. Cost has nothing to do with it. But I repeat, you cannot rely on good weather on this itinerary so be prepared.

It was our first visit to Japan and it was as fascinating as we’d hoped even though our stops were at maybe less well known ports, eg, Hakodate. This was a plus as it meant less traffic and crowds. We also just missed the short blossom season which was slightly disappointing but quick research told us we shouldn’t expect to see much by then anyway.

+1 I enjoyed this cruise and the ports, in spite of the deck repairs.

  6. Chairsin, galeforce, and any other photographers on this trip - I have been meaning for some time to thank you all for the wonderful pictures. So many of us really appreciate you taking the time to post them; for those of us especially for whom adventure cruising is really no longer possible (when we were fitter we did the Antarctic, and that was unforgettable) it is a real treat to travel vicariously with you.

+1. We are doing this itinerary next year and my excitement doubled when I saw the pictures of polar bears and walrus.

  7. Check with Seabourn (or your travel agent), I would think it is possible with prior approval.

The reef is a protected environment and I doubt the ship will get close enough to it to offer activities from the marina. I recommend you plan an excursion to the outer reef from Cairns. There are pontoons right above the reef where you can snorkel.

I should add that at that time of year there are jelly fish in the tropical waters so you will be given a very unflattering suit to wear in the water!!!!

It is possible to have a reef experience without getting wet, as there are submersibles.

  8. Apologies for 'banging on', but I do think that if the Patio Grill and/or Bar are going to be closed at any time during any cruise passengers should be informed before boarding.

I agree lincslady. I was on board for the attempted repair between Kobe and Alaska, which was a major disruption, closing the Patio Grill and Patio Bar, and the attempt was UNSUCCESSFUL.

  9. Just off Sojourn. There are a lot of squishy boards - they bulge up slightly and squish down when stepped upon - adjacent to both sides of the aft half of the pool area. Some are covered with potted plants, others out in the open. They are not a hazard now and don't impact area usage, at least for cooler AK itineraries. IF these boards become a tripping hazard or IF they are repaired during a cruise, THEN it will impact usage of the pool area to the point of impacting pax enjoyment. Sojourn departs mid-October for a sold 4-month Los Angeles to Cape Town itinerary. She will not go out of service before that's completed.

Maybe you missed my earlier post, with confirmation from the Office of the President, dated August 6th, that deck repairs are scheduled to take place "well before January 2019".

  10. As multiple posters, including myself, have said the deck issues did not adversely affect our cruise. So simply plan on having a great time, some warped boards and liquid coming up in places will not ruin your cruise. If it does, well...

If the ship is going to be taken out of service for the repairs to be done, someone's cruise is going to be cancelled.

    Dear Mrs. xxxxxx

Thank you for the email regarding your upcoming Seabourn Sojourn sailing.

Regarding the maintenance to the teak deck, we are able to advise that we have planned repairs that will be taking place well before you are due to embark in January 2019.

Again, thank you for contacting our office and bringing your inquiry to our attention. We look forward to welcoming you back on board again in the very near future.

    Best regards,

    Office of the President

As promised, the reply I have received from Seabourn.

  12. I have emailed Seabourn headquarters twice now, on 13th July and 26th July, asking if they have scheduled repairs to the deck. The only responses I have had were the automated replies promising a personal response from one of their representatives, which I am still awaiting.

Like Emporer Norton, I saw the deck immediately after the attempted repair "bubbling up" so I figure it has to be taken out of service and repaired properly, sooner rather than later. We are due to sail on Sojourn again in January, so it would be nice to know what Seabourn have planned.

If/when I get a response to my emails I will report back.

  13. On our most recent cruise on Sojourn there was a TK “compliance officer” on board who was there to ensure his master’s vision was being correctly enforced. Absolutely ridiculous and a couple of senior waiters obviously thought so too but didn’t dare say so. The eye rolling was eloquent enough with this guy breathing down their necks LOL

I think we were on the same cruise Rusty (Singapore to Vancouver) and I presumed that was why our friends were not able to have their Napa burger without lettuce or pickles.

  14. ..............

He’s right though in saying that TKG doesn’t bring in food from outside the restaurant and that there are no off menu items. If you don’t like that, take it up with Seabourn Management. This has been Thomas Keller’s policy from day 1. ................

Sorry, this is slightly off topic, but how is it that Thomas Keller has the right to say "you'll eat it my way or no way".? On our recent cruise I overheard someone request that their Napa Burger come without lettuce and the pickle. They were told that couldn't be done due to an instruction from TK. How silly! Of course the first thing they did on its arrival, was remove the lettuce and pickle

  15. Carlover54,

I certainly appreciate your point of view re: dress codes and thank you for your thoughts on my posts.

I guess I am just reacting to the constant obsession with the dress code. Nobody really cares except the repeat posters on these boards who want to influence the way others dress. I give my fellow passengers enough credit to assume they will dress properly without repeated threads on what proper is. And is someone is not dressed properly it simply does not bother me. I certain;y would never let it affect my enjoyment of a cruise.

    My thoughts EXACTLY.

  16. Jennifer ... I think you need to join us on Sojourn this holiday season. :halo:

I just hope the Sojourn is still sailing this holiday season. We are due to board in Singapore in January for 48 nights but I can't get enthusiastic about booking excursions, as I keep expecting to hear it has been taken out of service for deck repairs. We were aboard during the most recent attempt to rectify the patio deck. After the repairs were halted the deck was immediately deteriorating again. So everybody keep your fingers crossed.

  17. If the OP wanted to know what her husband should or shouldn’t wear maybe she should have looked at one of the many ( sigh, many) dress code threads which all answer the same question. Or better still, check the clear and straightforward guidelines on dress code already published by Seabourn.

Maybe the Dress Code thread needs an additional "this is the only one" like the Referral thread????
