2. How do they work? Our next cruise will be our 3rd with RCI and we have 1 with Celebrity, so what tier will we be? And what does that entitle us to?

Depends on when you did your first two sailings with RC and how long they were. Points for each line are separate but there is reciprocity of status.

You need to post more info to get a more specific answer.

  3. You will get flyers, but I would also visit the spa early in the cruise. They may be able to tell you about upcoming specials before you get the flyer.

I have had the best luck by speaking to one of the masseurs when they are handing out promotions flyers at breakfast in front of the Windjammer for their specials on an upcoming port day. If I sign up with them, they usually throw in something for free, like hot stones, etc.

  4. I booked my two sailings on the Quantum at 8am on the day they opened, so I got a good deal--my full C&A discount was applied to both sailings. Paid 1560. for the inaugural and 2185. for my 12 ni. SC.

I did the same for my 3 sailings on Anthem but only got a pro-rated C&A discount for those sailings.

The laser technology to detect a man overboard has been available for a number of years. The law as written has been attacked as being too vague as it has allowed the cruise industry to continue "testing" various systems without any deadline for the mandatory installation of a system.
Also, note, man overboard detection systems are not safeguards just for passengers; the crew needs this protection as well.
I am very sensitive about this issue. My father, while crewing aboard a cruise ship during a hurricane in the Pacific in the late 50's, was washed overboard while secured to a line. It took 45 minutes to discover that he had gone overboard and retrieve him. He sustained a shattered collar bone, and multiple fractures of both arms and both legs due to slamming against the side of ship as it pitched. He was home for a year and a half recuperating. So, do I think the cruise industry is dragging it's feet and not complying, definitely -- the tech is available.
  6.
You posted about non compliance with the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act and the DC hearings so you made the thread to be about more than noting a possible man overboard. It is as plain as day what you posted under the link.
Ah, yes. I did use the words "non compliance."
That is my opinion based on my evaluation of the excerpted phrase "to the extent that such technology is available:" And like any other opinion posted on these boards , albeit "the best drink," "the best cabin," etc., I am entitled to it.

The laser technology to detect a man overboard has been available for a number of years. The law as written has been attacked as being too vague as it has allowed the cruise industry to continue "testing" various systems without any deadline for the mandatory installation of a system.

But please note, apart from a few exceptions, posts to this thread did not address that either, but rather focused on the trustworthiness and professionalism of the author of the article.
  7.
This thread is about the article. An article that says a man allegedly went overboard. That has not even been confirmed. The article seems more about giving Walker another platform to claim that the cruise lines are not in compliance with the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act than whether a man in fact went overboard. Walker always leaves out the part of the act that says "to the extent technology is available". Even if it turns out to be a true that a man went overboard that is not what this particular thread is about. It is about Walker using the alleged incident to push his agenda to paint the cruise industry as evil. It is about an opportunist.
Since I am the OP, I will again repeat: the purpose of this thread was to note the "possible man overboard." It gave a link to the article from which the possibility was referenced.

I titled it "Possible..." because there was no straight news story that confirmed the incident and given the current talks in D.C. any news or rumors of this nature are bound to put another blemish on some people's perception of the cruise industry.

This thread was not about Walker's personal agendas...it was made so by people who chose to post their opinions about him on this thread.
  8.
But that is just wrong. Jumping overboard involves other people who should not be involved. Crew and passengers. It puts a burden on strangers.

As far as expense of funerals, that can be avoided with cremation.
Yes, I agree that involves other people, placing a burden on strangers, however some people given the choice of burdening strangers short term or burdening their family possibly long term would opt to burden strangers. Our society is filled with programs that reinforce the notion that the whole should provide for the one and many people are comfortable with that mindset.
  9. pray for this man and hope he found the peace he was seeking. its a horrible thing that this is the only option that he felt he had.

Believe it or not, there was a time when some people thought jumping overboard was an expedient and inexpensive way to end ones' life.

My father worked for the cruise lines for almost 50 years: White Star, Cunard-White, Moore-McCormack and finally for Princess until his death in 1969; many of the people who worked alongside him (including him) saw death at sea to be efficient. They lived through World Wars, the Depression, and saw the expense of a funeral as a burden to their families.

  10. I find it interesting that:

one person thinks I might be Jim Walker in disguise; I am a 64 yr old retired educator and grandmother as well as a solo traveler with no intentions of ever leaping to my death from a ship.

the original purpose of my post was to report the "alleged incident" and to address the possible negative impact of this most recent alleged incident on the talks in D.C and NOT to affirm or support the article by Jim Walker that I referenced (for those who might wish to read it) and yet, the thrust of most posts on this thread concern the journalistic, societal, and professional ethics of Jim Walker.

  11. The balcony studios are category SB and the inside studios are category SI. If you book one of these cabins you get single C&A points instead of the double points you would get if you paid the single supplement for any other cabin category.

No one knows yet what they look like. I have an SB booked for January and am looking forward to reports back from the initial folks who sail the Q.

From what I can see on the deck plans all the SI cabins are part of that connected grouping. There are two midship, one portside, one starboard side, midship and they are on decks 6 through 12. I know that Royal released some for individual bookings and retained others for the connected grouping. As I said earlier there are only 12 SB cabins, split between decks 6 & 7.

I am in SB 7648 on the inaugural and will report back with pics.

  12. I have friends who I got to book there first cruise for next year with us. Can I get OBC?

Sent from my iPhone using Forums

Yes. contact Royal Caribbean or log in to your C&A account. There is a form you can fill out. The OBC is issued after the "friends" final payment is made.

  13. Must be for the first 3 Night Quantum Sampler Cruise at November 18 out of NJ

Yes, used an add to date calculator-and it works out to Nov. 18th. Apparently, the US site is making notice of the Quantum's sailings out of the U.S. and not the TA.

  14. I'm new to the C&A, I joined after realizing the girls trip I took back in '10 would still count and be added to be cruise points! However on this trip, I'm traveling with boyfriend, a first time cruiser.

Don't forget to apply for the $25. OBC for bringing a first time cruiser on board. Apparently, according to C&A, even though he is staying in your stateroom, you will still get the credit.

  15. Allegedly, a 70 yr. old solo male traveler committed suicide sometime late Wed. to early Thurs aboard the Grandeur. Personnel did not know until a note was found by the cabin attendant.

    Here is the article:

    http://www.cruiselawnews.com/2014/08/articles/disappearances-1/person-overboard-from-royal-caribbeans-grandeur-of-the-seas/

The non compliance with the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010 is going to be another bad mark for the cruise industry at the hearings in D.C.
