Looking at a Panama Canal cruise Ft Lauderdale to LA. We then would head to our daughter in San Diego.

Any ideas on how we catch the AmTrak from the cruise port in LA to the LA AmTrak and how far away it would be?

Not very convenient. While there are several trains each day, The Amtrak route does not pass anywhere near the cruise terminal.

Here is a link to the route and schedule.

Do your homework and pick a station and then take a cab there. Some of the stations are just outdoor platforms in places I would not care to wait for a train. So do your homework.

Best bet is probably Anaheim station which does have an indoor waiting room (or atleast did the last time I was there).

Its about 35 miles from San Pedro to the Anaheim Station.

LA Union is a bit closer about 28 miles, but usually longer travel time. But it increases the train ride time.

There is a bus route from Harbor Beacon, near the port to LA Union, but would not even try it with luggage

On the other hand it is about a 1.5 hour drive or less from San Diego to San Pedro if your daughter can just drive up and pick you up.

The train is a fantastic way to get from LA to SD, but unfortunately it's pretty far inland from the cruise port in Long Beach. You would need to arrange for some sort of ground transportation to the nearest station. Eyballing it from the map, that would probably be Fullerton or Anaheim, but shortest distance isn't always shortest time in LA.

Very easy, take Uber or a Taxi to Union Station (it will be closer than LAX ) . Union Station is beautiful and you have seen it in many old movies. If you have time go across the street to Olvera St. and La Placita the birthplace of Los Angeles

Thanks RDC1. Not familiar at all with the area. Wasn't sure where cruise port is and after looking on a map it does seem tougher than I thought. We may just ask her and son-in-law to pick us up.

You can have a get a sedan through one of the shuttle companies for about $220 to take you from San Pedro to LA.

As much as I enjoy the train (used to take it a lot from San Diego to San Luis Obispo) it is a distance away from the cruise terminal. By the time you pay for local transportation, and the train tickets, it is not too much more expensive for a private car to just take you to San Diego and a lot less of a problem dealing with luggage. $74 or $112 (reserved business) for the tickets plus the local Uber or taxi cost

One other note. They are working on the rail bridge near Del Mar, CA. As a result the trains are not running from Oceanside to San Diego on the week ends for the next few weeks.

Not quite LAX is 19-21 miles depending upon route. Union Station is 24.7 - 28 miles. The 24 mile route is via the 110 , It is 28 miles using the 710. It is a bit further north than LAX.

While I agree with you about Union Station, your distance estimate was a bit off.

Just noticed an Enterprise rental near the port. We usually use them and they offer pick up so would have to see if they'd pick us up there. Then we would just drive down with the rental. Perhaps easier and quicker? Thoughts?

One way rental to San Diego would run about $160, mostly fee for one way. Easy, just take the Seaside Freeway to the 710 to the 405 to the 5 then straight down to SD. You should not run into much traffic after 10am.

Check the one way fare to various Enterprise locations. You might find one short on cars with a lower one way fee. The 160 number was to the SD airport.

Travel tip: If you're traveling with an Amtrak business class ticket (and you already have purchased it), there is a business class lounge upstairs at the terminal. Union Station is beautiful, but there are a number of less than desirable characters who hang out there, primarily in the main lobby area.

We use Amtrak when we fly out in or out of LAX. If you are traveling between LAX and Union Station, you can take the Flyaway bus. At LAX you catch it on the arrivals level on the center island. There's pretty good signage at the airport. There are several different lines, so make sure you get on the one marked for Union Station. It costs about $10, and the travel time is 30-45 minutes, depending on traffic.
