1-Day Precruise in Montreal

Recommended Posts

If you only have one day for a visit in Montreal, what is the 'must-see' attraction? We arrive early morning on a Friday so I was thinking of booking a 3-hour bus tour in the afternoon. We are staying at the Fairmont if that makes any difference.

Buy a one-day metro pass and go to Botanical Gardens (if you like that sort of thing). It's unbelievable! Also, ride to Mont Parc station and hop on the #11 bus--will take you to the observation point in the park. From there walk to the Chalet Mont Parc for another amazing view of Montreal and then walk down to Smith House and grab a quick lunch or refreshment on their outside terrace.

The port is very near downtown. Cruise ships dock in the port of Old Montreal. The area around there is quite charming, and accessible to other parts of the city by metro (subway.) I was just there, so as a point of reference, a walk from the central train station (beneath the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth Hotel), to Old Montreal is about a 30 minute walk. We did this walk several times.

I was just there for the weekend--stayed at the IC in Old Montreal, about a 20 minute walk to the port. Very good hotel.

As for the OP who wanted to know what to do in Montreal for a day, that depends partly on the weather and time of year, but mostly on their interests. Spending a half day wandering around Old Montreal would be good, shopping downtown would also be good, climbing up the Mountain in good weather if you like exercise (a big hill, really, but a beautiful park), wandering up St. Denis. Try to eat a meal at a local, nice restaurant, and try to avoid the tourist trap restaurants right down by the port.

There are lots of "attractions", but it depends what you like--museums, kids stuff like the Science Centre or Cirque de Soleil, shopping, parks, cathedrals (several), archaeological digs even.
