alaskahiker Posted August 5, 2012 #1 Share Posted August 5, 2012 I am looking at sailing from San Diego through the Panama Canal in December; but would like to know if the seas in the Pacific Ocean are rough at this time of the year. I would appreciate any input as to the best time to sail if they are rough. Thanks.
Rare Keith1010 Posted August 5, 2012 #2 Share Posted August 5, 2012 The answer is you just don't know and it's not because it is December. The seas may be very calm or it could be a little rough and no one can be sure what to expect. I would not hesitate to book the cruise. CruiserBruce Posted August 5, 2012 #3 Share Posted August 5, 2012 Keith is correct (as usual ;):D). You are sailing on the ocean. It could be rough, or calm, or somewhere in the middle. Typical Panama Canal "season" is Oct 1 to mid May. Cruise lines don't go thru in the other months. As April/May is Spring, it might be calmer then, but no promises. The Canal is an awesome special event. I wouldn't (and we have sailed the Canal 3 times) put a rough sea in front of going to the Canal.
Krazy Kruizers Posted August 5, 2012 #4 Share Posted August 5, 2012 Welcome to Cruise Critic. Have done the full transit of the Canal several times. It is a sight to see. We have experienced all kinds of weather in the Pacific and at different times of the year. Since weather is unpredicable -- book the cruise and go and enjoy the canal.
