BMJohno Posted June 20, 2018 #1 Share Posted June 20, 2018 Hi all, I am going on my first cruise in October on the Navigator of the Seas, around the Med. I was just wondering what currency I should bring with me, I have already paid for the drinks food and tips, so it is just for excursions and casino etc. Thanks! Clarea Posted June 20, 2018 #2 Share Posted June 20, 2018 All expenses onboard the ship will be in USD. Off the ship, Euros will be the most useful.

And do you know if there is there a currency exchange or anything on the boat so that I can swap some money if needs be?
Clarea Posted June 20, 2018 #4 Share Posted June 20, 2018 Great, thank you! And do you know if there is there a currency exchange or anything on the boat so that I can swap some money if needs be? The ship is not a currency exchange. They may be able to swap a small amount of currency at a poor exchange rate. There is an ATM on the ship that will give you USD and sometimes Euros. Best exchange rate would be a bank ATM off the ship.
Rare little britain Posted June 20, 2018 #5 Share Posted June 20, 2018 The casino takes US$. You can get cash out against your room account but they will charge an additional 3% (unless you have elected to pay any additional on-board expenses by cash ). Get US$ before you go from M&S. They usually have a good rate. All ports you will visit in Europe are the Euro € apart from Gibraltar which is the Gibraltar Pound but they will accept UK£ or €. Best to get a Halifax Clarity MasterCard as this gives you the bank conversion rate and does not charge a fee.
boscobeans Posted June 20, 2018 #6 Share Posted June 20, 2018 If you bring cash for extra tips while on board use US currency. Not all crew members get off in foreign ports and the easiest for them is always the good old US greenback. bosco

There is an ATM on the ship that will give you USD and sometimes Euros. We are booked in a J3 for this coming October and in view of the helpful info from Clarea I wonder if I could just confirm the following. I intend to pre load a Caxton Mastercard credit card with US$ solely for tips during the trip. Using this method I can transfer any unused US$ into Euro;s for a later holiday and it saves having to obtain and carry a large amount of US$ in cash around with me. I would be grateful if any recent traveller can confirm the availability of the ATM on the Navigator which I assume will be in the Customer Relations desk area. This method will be very convenient using an onboard ATM but definitely not so if I have to go ashore and use an ATM there :).
Rare little britain Posted August 7, 2018 #8 Share Posted August 7, 2018 The T&Cs say that you cannot use prepaid cards to pay your bill..... sorry I have no idea about using them on the ATM on board but I do know the ATM has a fee ($5?) to use it. Best to go to M&S and get hard cash! Or if you want to pay the tips prepay them along with your cruise fare or let the ship add the $14.50pp daily to your account? Then you have no money issues to worry about.

Thanks for the info LittleBritain. I have registered a separate credit card for paying any bill so that shouldnt be a problem and I have already pre - paid gratuities but I also tip on the occasions that we have had good service above and beyond..... accordingly I like to have a small amount of cash available to do that with and the mastercard would have suited my needs. However, if there is a $5 to use it then I dont think I shall be using it so thanks for the heads up on that.
Milwaukee Eight Posted August 7, 2018 #10 Share Posted August 7, 2018 While in the Med, we found the best exchange rate at well known bank ATM’s. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
