dreaminofcruisin Posted July 18, 2018 #1 Share Posted July 18, 2018 I know that in the past there has been a private offering announced in the Patter about a Port to Town shuttle in Livorno. To get to the train station you then need to catch a bus from there. I was reading a live from in 2017 that there was also a Port to Train Station shuttle private offer, but announced in the patter. Any experiences from 2018 about a Port to Train Station shuttle in Livorno? We will be on the Crown in August and it seems that the shuttle to town is usually offered, but the Port to Train station is a bit rarer. We will be DIY train to Lucca and Pisa. TIA.
frugaltravel Posted July 18, 2018 #2 Share Posted July 18, 2018 Last year I just walked to the nearest bus stop and took that right to the train station (and back). Very simple and inexpensive. Was also quicker than waiting for the ship shuttle being one of the first off the ship.
Wehwalt Posted July 18, 2018 #3 Share Posted July 18, 2018 A taxi was 25 euros to the train station. Might be worth it if you split it.
Rare Hlitner Posted July 18, 2018 #4 Share Posted July 18, 2018 I find FrugalTravel's post very interesting. We have been to that port more then 2 dozen times (with lots of different cruise lines) and never saw any shuttle bus within the port other then the usual transfer bus which only would take folks to a square located nearly a mile from the train station. The mass market ships generally dock at a distant port location from where walking out of the Port is prohibited. Some of the smaller ships and ferries dock at an area closer to the so-called Port Shopping Center (its not much of a shopping center)...and those folks can walk out of the port. On one of our visits we had reserved a rental car which could be picked up next to the main Port entrance (near the shopping center). The port Police would not allow our little group (4 adults) to walk away from the secure area around the ship. The shuttle bus (which drops folks downtown) refused to take us and drop us as they exited the port. In the end we were forced to hire a taxi to drive us through the port to the entrance which was only 1 mile. On the return we simply walked through the port back to the ship. This caused lots of problems with the Port Police who were shocked to find 4 people just finding their way through the port...but we just acted innocent and pretended not to understand a word of Italian or English :). When we reached our ship we ducked under the Police Tape (defining the secure zone) to the shock of more Police. But being Italy nobody knew what to do...so all was fine :).
