Alaskan Cruise Recommendations

DW and I want to book an Alaskan cruise for 2019, her 50th birthday. What cruise lines and ships do you suggest?What are the best itineraries? What are cannot miss excursions? Looking forward to all suggestions, thank you.

You will get a myriad of answers here, but I prefer the HAL 14 day Great Alaska Explorer, which I have done twice. The "cannot miss excursion" is the Peterson Bay Natural History Tour with the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies.

Just a little reading down the board would find dozens of things on every port you might be interested in. If you are interested, that bumps it up on your "must do" list.

Some reading will also suggest Glacier Bay as a prime target, but not all cruise lines go there.

What cruise lines have you used? If you like their product, that gives you a possible starting point.

As others said, do some research on the different ports and find things that are of interest to you. Once you have done that, research the itineraries that spend the most times in those ports. For me, the itinerary is much more important than the specific ship or cruise line.

My personal preference is a one-way Northbound itinerary from Vancouver. One-way usually gives you more time in ports and I like sailing to Alaska where the scenery gets better each day. This also gives you an opportunity to spend time before the cruise in Vancouver and after the cruise in Alaska.
