We will be on the Gem in July with extended family and stopping at GSC and thinking of a cabana. I laws have a problem with walking long distance. Is there transportation from the tenders to the cabana? Are they worth it,they say you get food and drink vouchers but we already have drink plan and the food on island is free.

We rented a small cabana and it was worth it. Even tho food and drink are included normally, with the vouchers will get you extras like a shrimp cocktail or seafood platter, cut up fruit, etc. Bottled water is provided at the cabana plus floating mats and they have towels right there so you don't have to take one off the ship. You also are able to sit and have the food delivered to you. I will say that the included buffet was good and the drink lines weren't too long.

As for the walking I have trouble walking long distances and it wasn't too bad. I did see a tram and also sand wheelchairs. This was last August so you can find out if they are still available.

Trams were not available when we were there a few weeks ago. I did see a few random carts carrying people, so that might be an option, but there was definitely no regular tram like there had been in the past.

While the walk to the cabana wasn't the worst in the world, it definitely wasn't short. Chalk up the heat in July and...

The thing we had the biggest issue with was that the walk was through sand, so surfaces were uneven and rutted where they are building a new tower. If you are considering a large cabana, please note that those have a fairly steep incline to reach the cabana.

I think a cabana would be a good option for you if you can find transportation for your parents. You might want to consider calling the access desk to see if they can help.

One other thing...the walk from the small cabanas (this is what we rented) down to the water is quite steep and the entrance to the water is really rocky. So that might be another thing to keep in mind as you are planning.

I was at GSC last month (Epic) and rented a large cabana. There was 8 in our group. Highly recommend. One in our group is handicap but they were able to arrange a golf cart to take him to our Large cabana #10. I did a lot of research prior. This large cabana is closest to the restrooms however furthest from the free BBQ lunch which is awesome!

We also all had the UBP so drinks were included however our cabana attendant served us so it was not necessary to walk down to the bar area. Also included "free" was a fresh fruit bowl as well as tortilla chips and three different salsa's. The food voucher credit we used for a couple of shrimp platters (which have to be ordered the night before you get to GSC).

All the large cabana's are built up high on a hill, with a steep ramp. I was not a fan of this as flip flops and sand can be a slippery but just took it slow. Why they just did not build stairs is beyond me.

The small cabana's are along the main path, so you don't have the ramp issue but you will have people walking by.

Everyone in my group agreed that is was the most relaxing day and highlight of our trip.

We rented a small cabana and loved it. The walk to the cabana was long but we made it. After a long day I felt walk back would be to long. So we asked and got a ride in a Jeep back to the road to the ship.

The cabana was great, it also has a shower in the back of it. We had the seafood platter which had lobster tails and shrimp.

I would definitely try to arrange a golf cart or something ahead of time if possible. We were on GSC a few weeks ago and rented a small cabana. My mother who has had knee surgery had a tough time walking to the cabana beach area. She complained to our escort and not once did he offer to get her a golf cart or any type of assistance. We saw no trams when we were there. It was a bit of a struggle for her but she walked slow and made her way.

Other than the walk and her issue we LOVED the small cabana and GSC. We would rent one again and plan to when we go back next year. The beverage service was such a nice thing to have. They came around every 10 or 15 minutes, just perfect. The food was very good. We had fruit along with chips and salsa waiting and then ordered some extras with the food voucher. We had a cheese plate, shrimp cocktail and sushi rolls (all cooked fish...crab and eel). The fridge was stocked with cold water and not having to bring beach towels is a plus. They are waiting for you in the cabana! There is a shower in the back to rinse off the sand. It was pretty hot the day we were there and it was nice to go inside and under the ceiling fan to cool off. One thing we noticed GSC doesn't have much shade and they charge like $40 for an umbrella by a lounger.

The buffet food was pretty good. Lots of options and some yummy desserts. Since it is a little bit of a walk from the cabanas we made a plate for my mom and carried it back for her. Hopefully NCL can help you out and you guys get to rent a cabana. For us it was definitely worth all the pennies spent. Best of luck!
