Rare MMDown Under Posted April 10, 2011 #1 Share Posted April 10, 2011 http://www.cruisecritic.co.uk/news/news.cfm?ID=4444 Interesting news item - Crystal's Standby Fares available to everyone, including Australians, in US$. Hope this is just the start of a trend!
lynsteve Posted April 10, 2011 #2 Share Posted April 10, 2011 Can Australians book via a overseas website?? Are there any implications involved. thanks Stevo
bazzaw Posted April 11, 2011 #3 Share Posted April 11, 2011 I am not too sure how useful a "standby" fare would be for Aussies - when the ship is departing a distant foreign country. It would certainly be valuable for locally based ships. Barry

We have done both. Booked a cruise early, got a good deal on the flight, and then watched the cruise fare drop closer to sailing. We have booked a cruise last minute, got a "bargain" fare and then had to pay top dollar to get to the ship. Its all swings and roundabouts , and when all is said and done, its our discretionary dollar , as to whether we choose to cruise or not.
bazzaw Posted April 11, 2011 #5 Share Posted April 11, 2011 David Agree - but my point is that the very nature of a "standby" fare means that you may very well not sail AT ALL!! This can be a tad inconvenient if you have already purchased an airfare to travel to the overseas point of departure! (regardless of how good a deal you got on the airfare!) :D I think I will stick to "guarantee" fares - but even those would make me nervous if they entailed departure from an overseas port. For our guarantee fare on Oriana from Brisbane (where we live), we only got a cabin allocation 3 days before departing, which even that would not suit MANY people. . ( mind you, we were VERY happy with the final allocation) Barry
