jbthemilker Posted July 25, 2014 #1 Share Posted July 25, 2014 I would like to write a novel this winter. I figure a good way to have meals made for me and a place to work with little distraction would be on board a freighter. Money is an issue. I am looking for a freighter cruise of more than 120 day length that costs $80 or less a day. Anyone have any Idea?

Rare Essiesmom Posted July 25, 2014 #3 Share Posted July 25, 2014 There is a board here for Freighter and non-traditional cruises, under Special Interest Cruising. EM

greatam Posted July 25, 2014 #7 Share Posted July 25, 2014 (edited) As someone already posted, freighter travel is NOT cheap. And a lot of cargo ships have an age limit. PLUS you must be very mobile because you may not be able to use the elevators (if the ship even has them) and will have to walk up and down a lot of flights of stairs to access various things. I was given a free freighter cruise from South America to Philadelphia. I do international logistics planning for food and was on the same ship as my many containers of grapes from Chile. Would I do it again? Was it a pleasant experience? Yes, I would do it again, particularly if it was free. And if you just wanted to stay in your cabin and write to your hearts content, I could see that. BUT I would just book a cheapo cabin on a cruise ship-maybe the repo from FLL through the Panama Canal to Valparaiso, Chile. I have done that cruise and there really is not a lot to see in the few ports the ship stops at. This cruise is usually done the first to middle of December. At least, if you got bored or got writer's block, you would have something else to do. AND the cost won't be anymore than a freighter (most likely a lot cheaper) unless you drink a lot of booze, buy a lot of ship "junk" or spend a lot of time in the casino. Then you could stay onboard and take the cruise to Rio or Buenos Aires. That would take up at least a month. You could stay in Patagonia and write. Or if you timed it correctly, you could take the other repo cruise that is about 60 days long that goes from Africa to South America, around South America, then back through the Panama Canal to the USA. Here a lot of info for freighter cruises worldwide. https://www.freightercruises.com/ Edited July 25, 2014 by greatam
