In Venice now -- not sure how to get to ship in port

We went to the port today to check out how to find our ship before Thursday but they would not let us in without a boarding pass. should we have boarding passes? Big item: we do not know which vaporetto stop to exit. We are staying near Zattere stop, across from Hilton Stucky. We were at Roma bus terminal and took people mover. With luggage this would be quite a trek from the people mover into the port proper. We are on the Sept 3 sailing.

I remember someone posting a website showing where ships are docked up to the minute. Would appreciate a link.

It is sizziling here. Very hot and humid. Felt like I was back in Bangkok! Wednesday supposed to be the same.

Diane,

Your cruise document booklet has your cruise contract in it, with your date of sailing, etc. That is your boarding pass. One for each of you. That booklet should also have a phone number for the ship in port or the port agent. I would think your hotel desk could assist you with a phone call to determine the location of the ship and the best way to get there.

Good luck and happy cruising!

Here is a very good website for how to get to the main cruise port Stazione Marittima: http://www.italylogue.com/planning-a-trip/venice-cruise-terminal-where-it-is-how-to-get-there.html or try http://www.reidsitaly.com/destinations/veneto/venice/planning/to_by_ship.html

Do be sure that is where your ship will be docked, though, as there is another smaller docking place called San Basilio, east of the main port. When I sailed from Venice that is where Swan Hellenic docked. If you are going from there, here are instructions:

If you happen to land at (or need to get to) the San Basilio docks, in the southwest corner of Dorsoduro, to get downtown you can either hop a water taxi, or take the public ferries/water buses known as vaporetti (lines 2, N, 8, 61, 62) at the S. Basilio vaporetto stop, just east of the ferry docks along the Fondamente Zattere (the quaiside promenade) and across a bridge. (By the way, they aren't trying to rip you off on the vaporetto. Even though this is the local equivalent of a public bus, the tickets really do cost €7. Welcome to Venice.) If you're coming from or going to the airport from the San Basilio docks, your best best is to continue walking east-southeast along the Zattere 450 yards to the Zattere vaporetto stop, where you can grab blu (blue) line of the Alilaguna traghetto (ferry) to Marco Polo Airport in 1 hour and 20 minutes (€15; tel. +39-041-240-1701, http://www.alilaguna.it).

We are are the same sailing, and my cruise documents show the ship to be at Venezia Terminal Passeggeri, Marittima Fabbricato.

I see what time we will have access to our stateroom, but do not see any embarkation times listed.

Do you know what time embarkation begins for this September 3 sailing?

Yes, Venice has been sizzling!

Also, we saw Viking Star arrive this morning at 11am while we were at San Marco plaza. So good to to know she arrived!

Suggest best way to reach the port from Zattere (where we stayed) is to take the Alilaguna Blue line...just ask where the stop .... It goes to Molino Stucky and then to the main port. Very easy way to get there.

However just a caveat....I am assuming you are docked at the main port and not at San Basilio which is very close to Zattere..... if there would be better to take one of the ferries that stop near San Basilio. It's walking distance but not with suitcases.....unless you are 20 years old.

Well we did figure out that we needed the Alilaguna line only a minute walk from our hotel. People at hotel did not have advice how to get to the terminal. It should have been easier. It was extremely hot and humid when we arrived at the terminal. We need to walk at least three-quarters of a mile from the Alilaguna boat to the luggage drop off point. We were told at the port that each cruise line chooses if they want shuttle buses and that Viking chose not to have them. We were not happy campers when we boarded.

Wow, Diane, sorry you had such a hard time getting info. Our post-cruise hotel was so helpful in making phone calls for us and giving us directions. We too had to walk, with our luggage, for about 15 min.to the airport terminal. But, it was a paved walkway and our luggage was wheeled.

Hopefully the rest of your cruise will be much more enjoyable than your journey to the ship.
