Walkie Talkie Advice

We've used walkie talkies aboard ship before - we have the ones that go 1-2 miles (I think). They don't work very well. Does anyone have experience using the new ones with the 5 mile range? Do they work better than the older ones? Thanks for your help!

Remember that a ship is mostly metal. And radio waves don't go thru metal very well.

Our 5 mile worked well most of the time, but not always. We found if one of us was in the open air it worked better.

Our 5 mile worked well on the Coral (and our cabin was all the way aft) IF we were out on the balcony. My husband would "beep" me on the walkie talkie and I could step outside to actually talk. Worked great.

Our little costco cheapies worked great in Alaska, from shore to ship in one case.

No walkie talkie thread is complete without an admonition about their usage. Please be considerate and use them as needed, not in crowded areas and briefly when you do.

It only takes a few radio assisted loud mouths to start these boards on fire, so let's not give anyone any fuel.

Happy cruising, we use channel 9 sub 5...little not at work humor.
