Dawn Menus -New, Revised, Final

jaja

Recommended Posts

We leave this Sunday, and I'll try to write down what I have and post also. I know I won't go hungry and always find something I like! I thought the menus sounded interesting, but not a lot different from the past. No more of those oxtails though!!! :D (or whatever they were)

This an old thread that has maintained it's legs. Let's not do something to get it poofed. There are a few posters that we are waiting upon for a report. Terry and Plantar's Edge haven't experienced the menus yet, but have indicated a willingness to report back after doing so.

.

I agree...I am the OP...and I would hate to see all my menu "picture taking" efforts go away...;)

This is a good thread for everyone to post their comments on the Dawn menus...

Of note....though I started this thread...I did not post my opinion...

Well..here goes....

We found the food very good..would we have liked a little more selections/variety...... YES......BUT--understanding that corporations must make changes to keep costs down and quality up....(and maintain fair fares)--I am fine with new menus...and I do want to see what the "tweaking" has done....who knows what will be the final menu...

Thanks again for posting them! Very helpful. We returned a week ago, and enjoyed them, and agree with your assessment.

The next rave review of them will be the first.

Luddite you can bet that I will report back my honest opinion. And I know PE will as well. As much bashing as he has been given on this board for something so trival, I know he will have a fair report as well. His postings stand for themselves and I have no trouble believing a thing he posts. I totally agree that there are too many flames being thrown around on this board for people stating their opinions.

What I find so mind blowing on this whole "argument" is that the menus are almost back to what they once were. Yes there maybe a few less choices in the daily specials or what ever you want to call them, but not that big of a difference, IMHO. That is part of what this board is for. To express our opinions.

Thanks Terry. I have a deep appreciation for your postings and I only bet on sure things.:D

I'm certain that you'll give us an honest appraisal.

Entrees are not the be-all to a menu. Let us know about the apps and soups. We know there are a lot of items that are gone and (presumably)not coming back. On a side note, I don't care for the chilled soups. They're gone, much to the chagrin of a lot people. They're no loss to me.

It's actually the appetizers and desserts that I'm least impressed with on the menus -- totally aside from the lack of chilled soups. I'm sure I would be able to find an entree that appealed to me each night, but looking through the other choices, there was very little that sounded appealing.

Like I said before, I'd much rather have the chilled soups on the menus than the lobster. To each their own, but I can go to a local restaurant and order lobster (for a large price, here in Utah), but I don't have that option with the chilled soups. To me, they represent "cruise food", and we will really miss them.

There is a chilled soup in the Garden Cafe each day. ;)

I found that out on the last day, it was blueberry and I didn't think it was very good. Very thin and milky.

I'm looking forward to hearing what other CCer's think of the menu when they return from their cruises.

I agree....as I previously mentioned...cold soups were at the buffet..next to fruit...I tried 3 during the week...they were NOT the quality that was served in dining room prior to menu changes..

Gone are the days of just ordering all the appetizers and no entree, with those menus.

Yes, I know. There was on our recent Star cruise, but we don't choose to eat at the buffet, especially at dinner time. In some ways, that's almost worse. If they're available on the ship, why can't they be on the MDR menu?

LOL.. if we have any luck at all in the casino it will be more luck than we have had our last three cruises. The last time we really had any luck at all was on the Sun back in 06. It's really getting to the point of why bother if you can never win. Back in Oct last year on the Pearl we won NOTHING. And I do mean NOTHING.

LOL.. funny thing is, I'm looking forward to the apps probably the most. They sound good to me. I am one of those that will miss the chilled fruit soups though. 8-)

Just off the Star to Mex.Riv. I have a new appreciation of the reasoning behind cruise menus that I'll share. JMHO!!!

We had a group of 300 Romanians on board last week. (all with a passel of kids that I wasn't prepared for at all...they took over the ship... the kids, I mean! ) There were also Asians, Mexicans, Germans, Brits, Japanese, East Indians, Italians, Canadians and a few odd Americans. As I sat at my dinner table looking at my menu listening to so many languages going on around me I thought for a moment about how difficult it must be to make food for so many nationalities and make something they will enjoy and still keep food costs in line to make cruising affordable for all of us. It's a staggering realization that they do this at each meal X3X7 for each cruise.

It is my opinion that cruise food has taken a fast forward dive to the bottom yet I found something to satisfy my hunger at each meal. It was far from gourmet but I always found something familiar that was usually adequate to good. I'm talking about the included food places. I also found a couple of nice surprises.

I truly enjoyed cruise food in the past because I love trying anything new. I now realize that I must put my obsession with tiny amounts of new and exciting food on hold and just go with whatever............ I miss the old menus....the NEW and DIFFERENT food I'd never heard of and the excitement of opening a menu and seeing something I've never had and getting really excited about being on an exploration that would most likely take me to new hights of foodieness!!!

I'm sorry to see that those wonderfully, heady, exciting menus are over. I'll find something that will feed me but I'm waxing nostaglic about the good ole days. It is my opinion the crew will miss out on surprising their diners with exotic fine foods most of us rarely see.

After cruising Star this week to Mex. Riv. I'm pretty sure that on my next booked cruise on the Jewel we will eat in specialty restaurants only and perhaps that is what NCL wants. We're in a suite so I know we'll eat very well for breakfast and lunch in a specialty rest. Heaven knows after my cruise last week on the Star why in the world would NCL even try to cook to entice or surprise the McDonalds Annonymous crowds that are taking over my favorite line.

The NCL crew and staff will always be the best in my book. Too bad so many of their clientele don't know the difference between Champagne and Mogan David, Foi Gras and Sheep Dip.

Good luck NCL. I wish you the best as you were my first and favorite.

Winnie, you're making me cry too! However, what you've posted does make a lot of sense. I'm one of those who think the entrees look okay, but the apps and desserts leave a lot to be desired. But, I enjoy a meal, then a show, and then really enjoy stopping by the buffet for a crepe to eat on my balcony late night before bed! So, I'll still have my dessert! :D

By the way, the worst sick I ever had as a teenager (years and years and years ago) was from Mad Dog...I had forgotten 'bout that. THANKS for those memories!

Are you saying they started the "new menus" on the Star last week?

I believe you are asking this of me? No, I can't say the new menu was on the Star yet. To be honest I forgot what the new Dawn menu offers. The menu on the Star was varied and offered many different things along with the always offered salmon, chicken and steak. I found the food to be adequate and varied. :) I did enjoy the buffet which I don't usually eat in and especially those famous pretzel rolls!

Yes, I got the impression from your post that they had already implemented the new menu on your cruise. Hope they hold off. We are on the Sun in two weeks and I'm not impressed with the new menu's at all.

I hope so too! Didn't like the new menu this summer on a 7-day, can't imagine it on our 19-day:eek:

Just FYI, according to Kevin Sheehan, CEO of NCL, there has been no decision for them to roll the menus out fleet wide and my impression (although I maybe very wrong here) is that it is not a for sure decision they are going to keep them on the Dawn. Others may have had a different impression of that, but again, that was my gut feeling. According to him, they were looking very closely at the end of cruise surveys they give.
