pnjkeith Posted September 19, 2009 #126 Share Posted September 19, 2009 High horse?? Let's get real here...most places don't allow smoking indoors.. some of you must live in backward states that permit indoor smoking , states that rely on Big Tobacco ... but times are changing hey even North Carolina is passing anti smoking laws this is a NON issue where I live...I don't have to go in bars where people blow smoke ...I am not used to seeing or smelling it I don't know anyone who still smokes really I don't "campaign" to have places be nonsmoking here..they already are On n On n On
laffnatu Posted September 19, 2009 #127 Share Posted September 19, 2009 I am not sure why people have to exagerate to make a point. I have never smoked and have been on over 30 cruises. Yes there are times when the casino can be a bit smokey but for the most I have never been in a ship casino where is was so bad and if it was I would move or just leave and come back later. If Carnival wants to try this I say why not and if it works than great and if it doesn't at least they tried.Tom You are truly one lucky man, Tom. But you're right...at least they tried. CwuzCwazy Posted September 19, 2009 #128 Share Posted September 19, 2009 MMCS Cruiser... Don't wash, sorry. Back in the "good old days" many more people smoked. Now around 4 out of 5 people don't smoke. And the number of smokers seems to be dropping every year. The "good old days" of smoking almost everywhere is about over. So sorry to have to break the news. What you really need is more smokers Obviously you aren't the sharpest tool in the shed cause you totally missed the point....Sometimes I wonder if some people on these boards can read.......that one went right over your head I guess. Anyway, the point was I was talking about was the phonies (the anti-smoking phonies). Your reply was totally off course, so I guess the concept was a bit tough for you. Oh, here's a thought...maybe you were one of those phonies!

And the only "phonies" I see out here are the smokers who can't see the writing on the wall. BTW I was in the Navy too (22 years). I guess you must be one of that 10%. bakechef Posted September 19, 2009 #132 Share Posted September 19, 2009 I would likely visit the casino if I didn't have to deal with smoke. I am one of those people that have their sinuses close up and throat get sore when I am around cigarette smoke, so this is a welcome change. What I don't understand is why they don't just install a good ventilation system in the casinos, make one side smoking and the other side non-smoking. I know for a fact that there are ventilation systems that are powerful enough to move a lot of air up and out of a room quickly. Working in food service, we have venting systems that do just this. And I don't understand the argument "smokers rights", you have the same rights as everyone else, but choose to smoke, shouldn't people who don't smoke have the "right" to clean healthy air? I am all for less smoking areas on a ship, but I do understand that there is a definite "want" for a place to smoke, it is not like someone could just decide not to smoke for a week and still enjoy themselves, it is an extremely addictive substance, but I think that they should be outside or restricted to areas where it doesn't affect others. You hit the nail on the head here. A non smoking boat is just not a good idea. However... the casinos need to be fixed. They are just way too smoky and I think this is Carnival's way of addressing this issue while trying to make both sides happy.
Carnivalover Posted September 19, 2009 #134 Share Posted September 19, 2009 The predicition that businesses will fail is not true. In most states where smoking has been stopped in bars and restaurants business goes on as usual. Vegas is even becoming more smoke free and banned smoking in all restaurants. Right on Carnival! CwuzCwazy Posted September 19, 2009 #136 Share Posted September 19, 2009 Well this latest news brings to THREE the number of normally smoking allowed areas that have been eliminated for the most part. First the Piano Bar, now the Casino, and finally the Sports Bar!!! Wait Sports fans, did you miss this one????? There really is no Sports Bar as we know it on the Dream. More great design news. When I queried John about it he said that there will be multiple TVS set up in the Casino Bar where everyone can enjoy the games. Guess what smokers....NO smoking at the {"Sports"/"Casino" Bar). They slipped that one by you, didn't they?

Thanks for pointing that out isn't it funny to see an old movie...one that cracks me up is "Now Voyager"...it is fun to watch for the glimpse at cruising life back in the 1930's... and fun to see what people then thought was romantic and sexy...when Paul Muni lights 2 cigarettes at once , one for him and one for Bette Davis and the funniest part about it is that she plays a woman with a bad heart condition...yet she is puffing away LOL Some old cigarette ads even had doctors puffing and telling people that cigarettes were good for your digestion haha bottom line...the times they are a changin You will still be able to smoke...just not in as many places that bother the non smoking MAJORITY

You better spend some money in there, or your excitement wont last long! On our last few Carnival sailings I have spoken at length with both the pit supervisors and managers in the casino. They have noticed a steady decline in the amount of $ put up overall - thanks to the economy. So they are already of a mindset, I would imagine, of slightly lower short term expectations. I think it would take a BIG $ swing on the Dream for them to pull the plug. This is a "test", which will take some time to evaluate. Of course, it's not simply an apples to apples comparison, as the Dream will be a "hot commodity" for a period of time - giving it a little bump right from the start. It appears that there are several tables, including FUN21, Blackjack, Craps, and Poker in the smoking area. I think this will work, and I hope it works well enough that the idea catches on and spreads. Tom

Splendor has that- only problem is, they put the smoking section of the Casino next to the non-smoking lounge (with just a walk-way between them!). My favorite slots are in the smoking section. wonderfullife Posted September 19, 2009 #144 Share Posted September 19, 2009 AGREED G'ma.....even my hubbby who doesn't smoke (I Do!) said sounds like Carnival is trying to shoot their own self in the foot.... Just like he said when I told him..."oh yeah...that is all fine and good until Carnival sees the revenues going down, down , down and also when they realize that the majority of casino patrons are usually smokers....A friend of ours that lives in Reno was just talking on the phone to us and he is a higher up employee at one of the casinos there (not really sure what he does) and I was telling him this and he is probably still laughing at ...(as he put it) "Carnival's Suicide"....well looks like these 2 cruiser may be considering either other cruise lines if this becomes fleetwide, or more Vegas and Louisiana Gambling trips.... Maybe it appears that many non-smokers are not gamblers but it could be that the smoke is so bothersome that they just decide to forgo the gambling so that they can breathe without choking? I know that I can't stay in the casino long due to smoke because it causes me breathing issues. I am not being sarcastic to smokers but sometimes the breathing problems are not just used to get you to stop. Aleece

Aleece I truly believe that ther is something to that 'non smokers are usually non-gamblers' thing. BUT....this is what's different now; there are a lot of smokers who have quit (a LOT of them!!) and they still like to gamble. Add those to the people who have always been non smokers who would like to gamble now that the air will be cleaner and CCL may just be able to pull this off without losing revenue. LHP Posted September 20, 2009 #146 Share Posted September 20, 2009 John mentioned something in his Blog today that I had never thought of... he said that lots of folks are going to the Casino to smoke...but not to gamble..simply using it as a "designated smoking area". hence...bothering the nonsmoking gamblers who are there spending their money. And I think that this restriction (that you must be gambling to smoke) is an effort to stop that.

From what I saw there, the slots are limited to very few unless they didn't show the entire area which will cause another problem with people waiting around for a machine to play. deborahjo Posted September 20, 2009 #150 Share Posted September 20, 2009 Loved the casino on the Splendor but the later in the day to night it got the worse the smoke was. It made it very hard to breath in there.
