We arrive in Civitavecchia in morning and have to be off ship by 10.00. Flight does not leave till 20.00. ??? How to spend day tour/lunch Any ideas ?

Assuming that luggage can be stored you can spend the day in Tarquinia see http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1082353 or in take train to Rome and spend day there (Roma Termini has left luggage facilities). Leave Termini for FCO no later than 5 pm.

We just posted an answer to a similar question but here it is again. From FCO it is only a 10 min taxi ride to the ruins at Ostia Antica. These are really interesting ruins that we have oft said is comparable or better than the more famous ruins at Pompeii. There is also a restaurant/cafe located just outside the ruins. As to the posting about Tarquinia, this town is nearly an hour from FCO so not sure why that would considered a reasonable option.

On the other thread, where you offered same advice ,another OP cautioned that there are no cabs available at Ostia Antica for return trip. Is that consistent with your experience?

We have never noticed taxis waiting at Ostia Antica. But, this should not be a big problem since there is a restaurant and cafe right at the entrance. It would be easy to have them call a taxi and there are plenty of taxis in the area since the ruins are close to the airport/

Hank, it looks like we will end up with a short term leased car, so we will probably drive to Rome to spend about a week. I am thinking it would be smartest to leave the car in long term parking at FCO, and then take the train into Rome because we certainly don't want to drive there, and then pick it up on our way out of town. Does that sound reasonable or do you have a better suggestion?

Thx Cathy

We had a big group that went on a countryside tour with Romeinlimo.com and then a drop off at the airport. They have posted the review of that tour is on their site. It was a fantastic day! We put together a group on our Roll Call with others with similar flights. You could easily put together a tour to Ostia Antica. I think that will be what I do next time.
