AKBeagleMom Posted December 21, 2009 #1 Share Posted December 21, 2009 Hello, We'll be arriving in San Diego on 2/13/09, with our cruise departing on the 15th. We'd like to find a nice place for Valentine's dinner on the night of the 14th. We'll be staying at the Marriott near Seaport Village. Here is what we'd prefer: A nice, romantic restaurant, preferably on the water Something near Seaport Village, or even within walking distance or a short cab ride We're not so into seafood (we're from Alaska, so we can get that anytime we want!) We'd prefer Mexican, a nice steak, or Italian Any suggestions from people familiar with San Diego? Thank you so much!
Splinter Posted December 21, 2009 #2 Share Posted December 21, 2009 Options would include the following: Take the passenger ferry from next to the cruise ship pier to Coronado and eat at Peohe's with a lovely view back toward the pier area and downtown San Diego. You could also take the same ferry and then cab from there to the Hotel Del Coronado and eat at 1500 Ocean. The Harbor House (mostly fish but also steaks) at Seaport Village Morton's in the Gaslamp (if you don't mind a chain for an expensive steak), although this is not on the water and does not have a view. One of the restaurants in the Marriott/Grand Hyatt complex such as Sally's (California) or Lael's (steak), but have a drink first at the Top of the Hyatt bar for a great view (ideally at sunset). There is also Roy's a the Marriott (Hawaiian fusion). Take a cab to Island Prime and eat in the C Level (it is on Harbor Island). Are far as a view, keep in mind that it will still be dark by 5:00PM or so in Feb., and you really can't see much but lights (no ocean or bay) once it gets dark. riffatsea Posted December 21, 2009 #3 Share Posted December 21, 2009 You don't have to go to the cruise port to get across the bay. The Marriott has water taxis right there and there is a passenger ferry now from nearby that crosses the bay too. IF you go across you will have great views of the lights of the city!! At the ferry landing you will also find Candelas which is an upscale Mexican restaurant. NOT just tacos and burritos!! IF you want to stay near the Marriott go next door to the Vela restaurant at the new Hilton Bayfront. It is just lovely!!! A short taxi ride will also take you to Bertrand at MrAs which will give you gorgeous rooftop views of the lights of the city. It is a real "date night" destination restaurant! Drifting Happily Posted December 22, 2009 #5 Share Posted December 22, 2009 I definitely vote for a drink at Top of the Hyatt first. If you want Italian, and you're willing to take the ferry/taxi over to Coronado, try Il Fornaio. It's right at the ferry landing and has great views back towards downtown. Jen1000 Posted December 22, 2009 #6 Share Posted December 22, 2009 I agree about Roy's. Love it and the setting is perfect. There is a lot of seafood on the menu but also many other dishes. I usually don't get seafood there and have loved everything. Melting chocolate cake and pineapple upside down cake are amazing. jagoodbar Posted December 22, 2009 #7 Share Posted December 22, 2009 One of Splinter's excellent suggestions was Harbor House in Seaport Village. You can get great views of the bay. You can call 619-232-1141 to make reservations and ask for a room with a view. Here is the web site for the restaurant: http://www.harborhousesd.com/ Also sunset for Valentines Day in 2010 is 5:44 pm so keep that in mind if you choose to book a restaurant with a view of the bay or ocean. You would still have some daylight for 30 minutes or so after the official sunset, so keep that in mind. Enjoy San Diego and your cruise.
