Viva Wyndham in Freeport

We are sailing on the Pride in February and I was looking at the all-inclusive excursion at the Wyndham in Freeport. Has anyone done this one and how was it? It sounds great, but I'd love to hear firsthand. Thanks.

We did not do the excursion, but did visit the Marketplace and the Hotel - the Beach facilities at the Hotel looked Excellent, to include local food/booze "huts" on the beach. On a nice, sunny day I'd go there in a heartbeat!!! ken

Ken, do you remember the name of this hotel? Is this the one that is within a short walk of the pier? I think I remember reading about a hotel like that, but I don't think I've heard of many people's experiences with it.

Jojo1108, I've searched this site for some info about the Viva Fortuna and I "think" I read about someone paying $92 pp for the excursion through Carnival. Someone mentioned it in a really good review on this board a few months ago, I just don't remember who! I have been looking at this resort as well, for a beach day in Freeport, but I'm not sure if it's worth the $92 or not (for us at least). I know it is cheaper to get the passes directly through the resort (maybe about $60?) but then you also have to add in the cost of transportation to and from. I do know I've read some generally positive things about the resort. If you haven't done so, try doing a search for the name of the resort: I haven't been there so that's how I've gotten my info.

Sorry I can't remember exactly where I'm getting these prices from. Sometimes you read so much it all starts to run together, LOL. We don't go on our first cruise until August though, so I'd love to hear your thoughts on this place if you do end up going.

We did this excursion last March on our last cruise. They have a wonderful beach (plenty of chairs for everyone). Free food and drink. A nice pool area and when we were there they were cooking conch fritters and ribs by the pool. It is a great place to spend the day. I don't know if I would want to spend the week there, but it is a great place to spend the day.

  • 2 weeks later...

I personally would give the thumbs up for VIVA and would make one other note. If the excursion thru the ship is around $90 it is a good bet... day pass is around $60pp and a cab can be as much as $25 each way - per person! Just a thought... It's a very relaxing day and you can come back TANKED if that is your passion... not top shelf and only local draft beer BUT make your own bahama mama's can be deadly!

we are thinking of doing this excursion next week- do they serve other drinks besides beer, or do you mean the only beer available is draft? I don't drink beer so it might not be worth it for me to pay that kind of money and not indulge!

I am perturbed that my 16 year old son has to pay the adult fee of $91 and he is not old enough to drink alcoholic beverages!

We're in Freeport from 7am-2pm and it sounds nice but a little pricey.

Laura

we are there from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. but something to consider for sure with the time. I'm sure we won't be up and off the ship till at least 10 a.m. but then again if we book through Carnival they might leave earlier than than. Otherwise I really don't know what to do in Freeport. You've got me thinking now so I better do some more research!

I am thinking of doing this next week. The Carnival excursion says 5 1/2 hours for $91.I have read posts that say it is half hour drive each way. What time do you leave the ship, arrive there and then leave to return to the ship. I note we dock at 8 a.m Not sure I want to take advantage of "all you can drink" that early. Something to think about before spending that kind of money.

OK, first as has been stated there is all kinds of adult beverages and all "slushie" drinks can be either booze or no booze. Last time they had a machine that you could just fill you cup and then go over and get liquor into it.... in fact sometimes the bottle was sitting next the slushie machine.

Which brings me to the next point. I tell this only as what ACTUALLY happens and not as to the correctness... kids around 15 an up seem to somehow manage at least a few drinks if they are determined to do so. Just a heads up. The islands are not real strict on that age.

One other note is when looking at the beach with the pool to your back the area to furthest left of the compound can sometimes be topless... many Europeans vacation here and it is overlooked.

As for doing the tour thru the ship I say do it because of the distance from the port... the cost of a day pass is around $60 or so regardless of age bought from the resort and cabs will want at least $15pp each way... maybe more depending on how many are going. If there is just 4 of you going it may be as much as $25pp each way. One of the few excursions that I would suggest doing thru the ship.

Remember that you are not going to a shopping area, no casino, no other restaurants around. The beach outside the compound is basically deserted and is a great little walk along your "own" beach. If shopping in Nassau the day before or after this is a great relaxing area with all food/drink included.

Thanks for your reply. Thanks for the heads up about the topless part - not sure if I want to wander into that area with a 16 year old boy LOL. I'm wondering if I should let my husband and son-in-law know about this so they can avoid it as well or will they make sure to check it out!

LOL... it is not every day and may not even occur...

I found out kinda by accident - We had been walking outside the compound on the left and my oldest daughter (about 15 at the time) stubbed her big toe on a piece of wood sticking up and it was bleeding... I was half carrying/half walking her back to the room down the beach when she say's "LOOK DAD, T#T'S"... I was like "what?" as we had just walked by someone laying out - and then noticed a whole family - Great grandma (yesshhh), grandma (uh-wups), Ma (hey now), and teen (yikes) laying out... I almost dropped my child and stubbed MY TOE! LOL - we were there for about a week and every day that family spent a couple hours "hanging out". Kinda strange seeing them at dinner..:D

Just a warning and that was about 4 years ago so who knows?

There were topless sunbathers there when we were there also. They were in the beach area for the hotel. They were people from our cruise. I probably would not have even notices had my husband not pointed it out to me. He said that he saw her several times around the ship. Thankfully with a shirt.

LOL... yeah it's kinda funny to see someone at the buffet after a day at the "beach"...

One thing to remember is that topless "bathing" is illegal throughout the Bahamas... not always enforced, especially in private settings. Just don't go to Cable beach and "air em out".:D
