Aside from the planes How is Maho Beach for water/beach/activities

The draw at Maho is the planes taking off and especially landing. The beach is a perfectly fine beach but it does not have the palm trees and atmosphere of other beaches. It does however have something that is unique and that is the planes. There are two bars at either ends of the beach. The smaller, Driftwood is at the quieter end closer to the big resorts and Sunset which has more action. I am more familiar with Sunset and it has food, drinks and chairs and washroom facilities. Check out the surfboard that has the planes scheduled for landing and also listen for the announcements of the incoming planes ETA. There is a little bit of a slope to get in to the water but we did not find the wave action too strong. The waves do pick up just after the big jets go over the beach though so beware of that. It is a fun place and a great place to take photos but it is not the best beach on the island. Mullet Bay is perhaps the nicest beach on the Dutch side and it is a ten minute or so walk or 5 minute taxi ride over to Maho. Many people spend time at Mullet in the morning and then head over to Maho for the afternoon. Give yourself plenty of time to get back to the ship in the afternoon as the Simpson Bay bridge opening and the rush hour traffic can really add to the time that it will take to get back.
