Carnival Magic Questions Only

Recommended Posts

TV Channels are from the US - ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, ESPN, plus the usual CNN, CNN International etc...

I can answer the second question a little bit better when I'm on board Magic in a week.

How are they going to pick up US Network feeds in the Med? I would have thought that it would be just international feeds. Have you been on a Carnival Med cruise before and received those feeds?

we are booked on the europe 12 day cruise on the 4th sept so getting excited would love to know the entertainment programme by husband loves queen so a tribute band would be great anybody heard anymore entertainment info?????

Heald never mentioned Tribute bands beyond that initial post a few months back. We'll see if they really follow up on that. Queen would be good (Abba - not so good).

Good question. They did not pick-up the U.S. network feeds.

Here is an appox. list of the channels provided.

CNN International

BBC World

Sports Network

A ship's channel that ran a collection of programs from the Discovery networks

French TV

German TV

2 free ship's movie channels

As for the sports bar question, there really wasn't a sports bar to speak of. In the Sportsquare area, it is advertised as having "the big game" on the tv's on the outside bar over there, but in the Med, there was nothing playing. One day the casino tv's had racing playing. That is pretty much it.

Oh, and no Queen Tribute band. The bands were Blood Power, The Magic Show Band and a duo from Europe.

In the showroom there was a show one night as a tribute to the 70s. It was just okay in my book. I didn't think the leads had very strong voices to carry a show and I know I was awake and alert in the 70s and still didn't recognize a few of the songs.

We are also booked on the 26 and I am battling with the excursions right now. My husband is worried about getting back on time, but I want a little freedom for my favorite pastime SHOPPING! I have checked some private tours with a driver and the cost are quite high. Some higher for one day than the cost of the cruise. We are confused. Want to see Florence and Pisa, but tours do not allow shop time on the Ponte Vecchio. Have one of Florence which seems to be the answer and has trans to and from and a short tour and 4hrs of free time. Now digging in to Rome.

any suggestions for excursions on the Aug. 26 cruise of the Med. Anyone know if the cabs outside the port are reliable for such a long drive, or what they charge, compared to the Carnival tours. Also how available are they if you wait to book until you board? Would appreciate any advise on these subjects.

Judy, Check out zydecocruiser dot com. He and his wife did a B2B on the Inaugural cruise of the Magic, and I believe he mentions the names of the tours they did, and the tour guide companies.

i just got off the Magic 12 day cruise today. I am sitting in my hotel in Barcelona winding down before we fly out tomorrow morning. Let me knoe if you have any questions at the moment. Just by glancing the past page I can answer a couple....

- There is no "Sports Bar" per say, but the tvs in the casino bar are for sports. There are quite a few of them and they mostly showed sports with the occasional news channel.

- There was no tribute band, one of the shows later in the cruise was a Lional Richie tribute. Blood Power is the asian rock band. They mainly played in Ocean Plaza, but they also hit the Lido deck at times.

It was an amazing cruise with absolutly wonderful ports. We had an incredibles time.

I would advise against taxis at ports in the Med. Best way to go is to share private excursions with others on your roll call or do ports on your own. The ports of call boards on cruise critic are a great resource. Good luck.

Too bad. That was a good idea. But those bands aren't cheap and maybe Carnival didn't want to pony up the cash for a real tribute band.

Don't forget... for anyone doing the transatlantic and thinking about tv. After you get so far away from land there will be no live tv only taped shows like Discovery and history channels have. Also there will be a couple of movies that play over and over and if you are thinking sports its mostly soccer

Yes. It isn't like they have a cable hookup or a TV antenna on the top of the funnel. TV, Internet, etc comes via the ship satellite connection.

Good question. They did not pick-up the U.S. network feeds.

I didn't even try to watch TV other than the ship location map. They can pick up whatever Carnival contracted for.

Lots of people hire cabs in port for tours, but agree on the price first. Hire the cab for the duration. On a long drive don't take a cab one way somewhere and expect to find another one to take you back to port. Besides, the one way price will probably be the same as round trip.

Example - in Messina, a taxi to Taormina is about 150 euro round trip + a 2 hour wait time and you don't pay until they get you back to port.

The dead area is usually just 2-3 days in the middle. Technically possible, but not enough demand on a daily basis to make it cost effective for the providers or customers. Internet service should not be impacted.

Tiggerman, I have a question. Could you tell me where you dock at Monte Carlo port? I have heard that you can dock in a couple of different places and that you could even have to tender in.

Also, would you happen to know if there are taxi's at the port of Livorno to take you to the train station or what time does the bus start running? Where does the magic docks? can you walk into town to get to the train station? Thank for taking questions, rlyans

Taking taxis in ports to cities far away from the docking area is ill advised. There are many well vetted companies that provide tours and all are reviewed on the ports of call boards. These companies know when to get you back to the ship and will take you from attraction to attraction. For Rome, the train is only €9,60 round trip (less than $14) with a BIRG ticket. You can set up walking tours ahead of time with tour companies.

We are using Roman Candle. There are several others as well and all are reviewed on Tripadvisor. As for Livorno to Florence, because of the time factor, it makes sense to take a taxi from the port to the train station as your time is at a premium. But free shuttle service is available. If you want to see Pompeii and Amalfi coast from Naples, best bet is a tour company like AP Tours, Romeinlimo, or the other big ones. Join up with others on roll call doing tours to drive down costs.

Princess offers decent tv networks on its Med cruises such as CNN, ESPN2, and ESPN International. The ESPN2 is similar to ESPN in US as it shows baseball games and other major US sports available on ESPN US as well as the traditional sports center. I guess Carnival does not offer that. Too bad.

Carnival always docks in the same place. Some ships do tender. Carnival Magic happens to be in Monte Carlo today and you can see on a MC web cam
