zoethesailor Posted September 5, 2010 #1 Share Posted September 5, 2010 What would be the easiest and cheapest (as far as not getting lost) way to get to the Porta Portese Flea Market then to the Colosseum? Has anyone ever gone to the flea market, and what can we expect. Thanks for your help, Wendy
Rare cruisemom42 Posted September 5, 2010 #2 Share Posted September 5, 2010 From the hotel, you can walk to the train station at FCO and take the local train to Trastevere -- they depart frequently, about every 15-20 minutes (not sure if it may be slightly less often on a Sunday morning...). I think the train costs around 5 euro. The market runs all the way from the train station to the actual Porta Portese (old gate). From there, you could take a nice 30 minute or so walk to the Colosseum that would take you past the Mouth of Truth (Bocca della Verita), and along the Circus Maximus to the Colosseum. You can map it out using walking directions with Google maps. Alternatively, I'm sure you could pick up a taxi around Porta Portese. There are probably buses also, but I rarely use them in Rome. Perhaps someone else would be able to give you a bus route. After the Colosseum, you could walk to Piazza Venezia (not far), where I believe the FCO Hilton shuttle picks up and drops off. euro cruiser Posted September 5, 2010 #3 Share Posted September 5, 2010 The #3 tram (which has been running as a bus line while they work on the tracks, but may be running as a tram again) goes from Porta Portese right to the Colosseum, passing by the pyramid along the way. I have to say I was not very impressed with the goods on offer either, but I enjoyed the experience of it.
zoethesailor Posted September 5, 2010 Author #6 Share Posted September 5, 2010 Thank you for the great information. I do need some more... Is there only one regional train into Trastevere from FCO? Do I need to know the train number? Would we pick up the #3 tram at the Trastevere train station? I also appreciate your honest opinions on what you thought of the flea market, I think DH is more interested in the experience, or he has been watching the Antique Road Show too much! Wendy
euro cruiser Posted September 6, 2010 #7 Share Posted September 6, 2010 There are two trains each hour, at :27 and :57 after the hour. The #3 tram (or bus, whichever is running) starts its route in the piazza in front of the Trastevere train station, so you could get it right there. If you do, I'd only stay on it until the first stop, or you'll miss the market. The distance from the train station to the Porta Portese (the end of the market) is about a mile, so you could easily walk/stroll that as you look at the stalls. zoethesailor Posted September 6, 2010 Author #8 Share Posted September 6, 2010 Okay, I think I got it. I take the regional train from FCO to Trastevere. From the piazza at the train station take the #3 tram to the Colosseum. Sounds easy enough, thanks again for the great information. Wendy
euro cruiser Posted September 6, 2010 #9 Share Posted September 6, 2010 One of the things I love about the #3 is right before it arrives at the Colosseum it climbs up into the park, then kind of "bursts" out at the Colosseum. Very dramatic.
