Just off the Dream-Horrible cigar smell from room next door

Berwyn - Don't need to. I have been a research scientist for a number of years and it is sad that you need to be informed that Chris41's method in no way provides credible data. There are too many variables to list that can change the outcome of the "experiment" as well as the error of some of the assumptions regarding smoke and diffusion of the non-visible chemicals present. The only thing that would be factual about the "experiment" is that he stood out on the balcony and smoked a cigarette. His "PS" is obvious. Good try but no cigar!

I was not involved in that "scientific " study just so you have your facts straight.As a person that is into scientific studies I would think that you would have paid more attention to detail....LOL

 

Good point on the whales tail- There must be no cancer causing chemicals coming from the stack. Of course if that is the case why have the federal govt and so many states put all the restrictions on type of fuel and idle time for truck drivers. Did some of you know that a truck driver in most states can no longer idle thier truck to get sleep for more than 5-10 minutes unless the temp has been below in some states 20 degrees for more than 12 hours. They say this will stop a lot of pollution that can lead to health problems and global warming. Now these same people that are all for these restrictions against smokers and diesel trucks idle time don't think anything about getting on a very large ship and cruising about for no reason except personal enjoyment. WOW think of all the pollution and other chemical belching out of the ole WHALE TALE:eek:

Everytime I read how people stuff towels under their doorways, complain about smoke pouring under their balcony dividers, smoke coming into their room from the balcony below or above them, the couple who was woken up by cigar smoke pouring into their room while they were sleeping, smoke coming through the walls, etc. I LMAO (pathetic)!

 

It's not the smoke...it's the odor.

The smoke may dissipate but the odor does not...not that easily anyway.

 

If you are a smoker, you wouldn't smell it but if you walk into a building, where people congregate outside to smoke (on their breaks, or whatever), long after they have returned inside that odor is still there. Someone who doesn't smoke, walks into it and the smell hits you like a wall.

 

Yes, when I am on my balcony and the wind is blowing and the person in the balc below me or upwind of me is smoking, I do smell it and yes, it reeks.

 

You can go to any smokers home and wipe the walls with a towel and pick up nicotine stains...that stuff sticks to everything and long after a smoker has finished their cigarrette, that odor is attached to their hair, their clothing...not the smoke, the SMELL.

 

 

I don't care if people smoke on their balcony....I don't cough, I don't complain. You all have limited areas and I can find a place that is smoke free....Yeah, it annoyes me when I have to leave my balcony, but that has only happened twice in all my years of cruising so it's not bad.

 

BUT please do not act like your 'odor' is not bothersome because it is.

Halos, I know what you mean about not being aware of the smell of cigarettes. Both of my parents smoked and I never did notice it untill I was out on my own and then I would go and visit and the smell was just horrible.

 

Both of my parents died of lung cancer (my mom was very young) and I hate cigarettes, but I still think people who smoke them should be allowed to smoke in an outdoor space without others being rude to them.

A cruise ship is 3,000 people stacked and packed into such tight quarters, that outdoor spaces are shared spaces between the majority who don't smoke (and have a good sense of smell) and the minority who smoke (and have lost their sense of smell) when it comes to smoke. Stacking people on top of each other in balcony-cabins, and then suggesting that "outdoor spaces" are not a problem, kind of misses the point- randomly assigning smokers and non-smokers in rooms next to each other is not the best way for anyone to enjoy their vacation.

We just got back from a cruise on the Destiny. We had an aft balcony room and the smoke drifted onto our balcony and it was offensive.

 

How can a smoker dismiss the fact that people can be offended by the smoke, that it can cause sore throats, and brochial issues? Your habit effects my health and I have a right, just as you, to enjoy my cruise.

 

I also never understand the mother who says I would never smoke around my children or the person who says I would never smoke in my house. Why is that you think? Because they realize second hand smoke could harm their family and stink up and discolor their home. But my cruising neighbor better "suck it up" Ridiculous!

 

Yea I know it's allowed on Carnival but just because it is not against the rules does not make it ethically right.

And I agree with this TOTALLY...Rudeness for any reason is just unacceptable.

The way I look at it is this...I enjoy cruising. The smoking situation is what it is.

 

IF I want to continue cruising, any smoke (odor) that bothers me is not bad enough to make me want to cease cruising.

 

IF it were that bad for me, I'd stop cruising.

 

 

 

The little bit that I have to put up with is not that bad. I have never smelled it in my cabin....that is what is important to me. That is 'my' space for that time period. The rest of the ship is public space and I won't ever act rude or annoyed with the occasional smoke® I run into.

 

I am just really lucky that I don't like to gamble because the casino is usually the worst area (well, that and the piano bar...so I avoid that as well...there are a lot of other places to go on board)

they also flambed cherries jubilee and bananas foster with open flames

and the waiters danced with lighted candles in baked alaskas on their heads

you could also shoot "skeet" off the side of the ship

 

and ..times change...rules change

 

In today's world it is ridiculous to have so many indoor smoking areas

 

they need to have a few indoor and outdoor areas, and make the piano bar and disco NON smoking

 

control/limit smoking on balconies (I would prefer eliminating it but limiting it to some areas/decks is a start)

John Heald said the "experiment" on Splendor with no smoking in Piano Bar and Disco is over....it is now confirmed that they will remain non smoking. Very few complained and they noted that smokers were able to leave, go outside or to another smoking bar/casino for a smoke

 

Now...let's hope they make that the rule on the whole fleet !!

Now a pipe for some reason, does smell good. I have no idea why, but I've always liked the smell of a pipe. Not many people smoke those anymore, though.

Nope. Don't like the smell the perfume either, but I can usually get away from that one person easier than I can a room full of smokers (in the piano bar or casino where I have to leave the venue to breath and not be able to enjoy that venue). Can't comment about a person with perfume on the balcony as I haven't cruised with a balcony room yet.

Esty, you are all for E-cigs, how about the next cruise you go on you go and pass the word about E-cigs to all the smokers who bother you. Let's see if any of them will want to sit down and want to listen to what you have to say about them. We smokers know the options already about the E-cig, so enough already about seminars held onboard a cruiship as no one will even attend, except maybe you to boost your self esteem so you can report back here how your analogy as to how your constant "ranting" on E-cigs should be implimented, unfortunately for you it will be a bust.

 

It it what is is, Carnival ALLOWS smoking people, it will never change no matter how hard you gripe and moan and complain on this board. The changes already have been made.
