Port vs. Star side

The port side is best if you intend to be on your balcony for sailaway from FLL. There are lights, flags and horns emanating from some of the condos near the end of the channel. A very festive atmosphere if you prefer to spend time with your travel mate(s) rather than with the throngs on deck. Of course, it is irrelavent if you prefer the latter.

I'm not sure it makes a big difference in other ports--sometimes port, sometimes starboard is "better."

It also depends on whether you like morning sun on your balcony or afternoon sun. That is how we sometimes chose which side we'll be on and other times, we chose due to the land we'll be passing.

Look at your itinerary and then decide if you want to see land or sea, have morning sun or afternoon sun.

Edited to add: Port = left side and Starboard = right side. You can easily remember this because "port" and "left" have 4 letters each. "Starboard" has more than that, just as "right" does.

I've only been to some of the ports (St. Thomas, Antigua, Barbados, St. Lucia) and found really nice views of the port when located on the starboard side of the ship. However seeing as many of the ports are really harbors, there are probably good views off the other side as well.

If the itinerary were different (like cruising up the coast of Italy) then the side of the ship might matter for scenic cruising, but not really for the Caribbean. My recollection is the really nice view of the Pitons in St. Lucia as you sail away going toward Antigua will be off the port side of the ship.

So not all views will be available from a single side of the ship.
