epic 9/25/10

I have been hesitating to write since anything that's not glowing can be met with very harsh replies. I don't post very often, even though we have been on 20+ cruises, 7 with NCL (our personal favorite cruise line). But our family would not chose to sail on the Epic again.

While the food was good to very good and we enjoyed ourselves and had a good cruise, we felt the ship had many design flaws such as low ceilings, no promenade, limited ocean viewing from public rooms, having to walk through the casino to get to almost anything on board, the cabin had a very short bed and very tight space (lots of storage though). My sister and father shared a cabin and they both disliked the bathroom setup. It's a lovely ship that looks like a hotel, but it's not for us.

None of the things I've mentioned kept us from having a good time. Any day on a cruise ship is a good day for me. As long as it floats and has food, I'm happy. But with so many other options out there, we will probably chose another NCL ship next time.

Excellent exercise in defensive writing.

Too bad the loyalists here make it necessary to be defensive about your own opinions.

There's nothing wrong with this review ... not every ship is right for everyone. You stated why you've decided Epic isn't for you. You came to this conclusion after sailing her, and not before. While it wasn't your ideal cruise, you maintain you had a good cruise, but wouldn't choose this ship again. Everyone is allowed to make this kind of call, which still allows others to make up their own mind.

Nobody who has ever written a review on Cruise Critic has ever had to defend anything that they have said.

As long as they post the review in the review section. (Such common sense, huh?)

However, for some reason, some people choose to post thier experiences/reviews here on the DISCUSSION board and then come away surprised when people have the gall to actually discuss it.

I've never understood the reasoning behind not wanting a discussion, but still posting to a discussion board when there is a perfectly logical alternative available.

And let's not forget the quote:

"This is a forum - not a support group. We do not "owe" anyone unconditional acceptance of their opinions."

With the exception of the inaccurate statement that you have "to walk through the casino to get to almost anything on board," the review is perfectly fine in expressing one party's opinion.

In fact, there are elevators and stairways both fore and aft of the casino so there is no problem getting to the Manhattan Room at the stern or O'Sheehan's and the entertainment venues toward the bow without passing through the casino, for those who, for whatever reason, consider that to be a significant obstacle. This, by the way, is no different than the deck layout on all the Jewel-class ships, where the main theater is forward and restaurants and lounges are aft of the casino. And no different from Celebrity's Equinox, for example, where the casino is aft of the main theater and forward of several bars and the main dining room. If this is such a problem that OP won't cruise Epic again because of it, he or she will be unable to cruise most of today's cruise ships.

And I'm 6'5" and haven't a clue about the low ceilings comment, as the ceilings seemed just fine to me. Can't imagine why they should be a problem for the 98% of the population of lesser height. Bed was a tad short, about the length of a standard twin or double, but no big deal, even for me.
