MrPete Posted November 14, 2010 #1 Share Posted November 14, 2010 I'm among people with large heads in a field of spaghetti, when my concious ear is hearing something about Carnival Spendor coming off the TV. I roll over, open my eyes, and here's a fictional couple, Frank and Gladys Madden, relaying their horror story on Weekend Update. I back the DVR up, and see they are being asked to recount their story, as told to Wolfe Blitzer in San Diego. The woman goes on to tell the nightmare of finding they got a Jr sleeper instead of a Jr suite, no window, no caramel flan at dessert, only three choices of ice cream, a jumping class of fat women overtaking the gym,and not being able to find her husband in the casino. She then relates the lights going out as she's applying makeup, where she then laid down and slept for three days. When the hushand was asked why he didn't wake her up, he answered, "Would you?". This skit reminded me why I stopped watching this show, and changed the channel to Nick at Night. I then returned to the field of spaghetti. ozman Posted November 14, 2010 #7 Share Posted November 14, 2010 I thought it was funny. I think everyone has a different sense of humour. It was funny because it reminded me of some of the posters complaints on these boards. I grew up with the first years also. The last few years have been good
CEO of Caribe Deck Posted November 14, 2010 #8 Share Posted November 14, 2010 I didn't find it funny either, Mr. Pete. I thought it was a tremendous slam against cruise passengers. Aside from the original Early Years (Gilda, you are still missed!) the best description of SNL was provided by Rudy Giuliani when Lorne Michaels asked him if they could be funny again after 9/11. Rudy's answer, "Why start now?" was the best description of how far the show has fallen below the bar.

nothomeonacruise Posted November 14, 2010 #11 Share Posted November 14, 2010 Yes, it was a parody of the stupid things people complain about on cruises. I don't think it was making fun of the real experience on the Splendor. Fan of the 1st season of SNL, too.

maabell4 Posted November 14, 2010 #13 Share Posted November 14, 2010 I didn't find it funny either, Mr. Pete. I thought it was a tremendous slam against cruise passengers. Hmmm...I didn't think it was a slam against all cruise passengers. I think it was at people who are clueless. I think SNL is hit or miss, but this season there has been some hilarious stuff. LynneL Posted November 14, 2010 #14 Share Posted November 14, 2010 I found it pretty funny too. A poke at cruise passengers - maybe....but they probably got the idea from the things you hear people complain about on these boards - lol.
marshhawk Posted November 14, 2010 #15 Share Posted November 14, 2010 candygram Gosh I miss the early years of the show, but I just figured I was growing one way, the show was growing one way and they weren't the same way. I have not laughed at a SNL in years, so I don't watch. Last night-not funny, just made fun of cruisers.
oceanbums Posted November 14, 2010 #16 Share Posted November 14, 2010 I'm also a big fan of SNL first years and have some of the DVDs; still using Emily Latella's line... "oh. never mind."
maabell4 Posted November 14, 2010 #17 Share Posted November 14, 2010 Here is the thing...a lot of humour is "making fun" of someone. If it's not done meanly, which I don't think it was, it's funny. We are all funny in some way. Humour, and any art, is subjective.
bigtoeswim'n Posted November 14, 2010 #18 Share Posted November 14, 2010 Here is the link Thanks for the link. I clicked on it but it freezes with 15 seconds left on the commercial. I'm techno challenged. I know this problem has to do with the "buffering." I have high speed internet. I was told the buffering is done at the place of origin, meaning where ever hulu has their server. Anyway, I'll keep clicking on it and maybe it will work on the 11th try or something. Any help, speaking on very simple, non-computer gargon on how to get this to play on my computer would be appreciated. This freezing happens on youtube also. but with patience, i can nudge youtube along and I can see the videos. most videos work just fine. well. g/g

KansasTexan Posted November 14, 2010 #20 Share Posted November 14, 2010 LOL. Funny! I think I met them on a couple cruises. (I know my friends and I met one guy nicknamed Captain Ambien.)
MSRussell Posted November 14, 2010 #21 Share Posted November 14, 2010 Thanks for the link....I just watched it. I didn't find it disrespectful in the least. I LOVE her husband. Carnival sure is getting free publicity out of this.
maabell4 Posted November 14, 2010 #22 Share Posted November 14, 2010 I really thought they would go after Carnival, but I guess there is not much to go after.
Forchunut1 Posted November 14, 2010 #23 Share Posted November 14, 2010 I thought it was very funny! I think I've read some of their posts on CC! :D I also thought it was interesting that, given the opportunity, they didn't play to all the specific circumstances involved on the Splendor cruise. Bonneville02 Posted November 14, 2010 #24 Share Posted November 14, 2010 Kinda weak. The stereotypical Jewish middle aged woman character is really so played out. Been done a million times on other shows already. The only part that was remotely funny was the husband's only line. On the other hand, had a similar skit been done 35 years ago with Gilda Radner, she would have made it funny.
Poorplaya Posted November 14, 2010 #25 Share Posted November 14, 2010 I thought it was ammusing, nothing overly funny, but ammusing, like said earlier, everyone has a different sense of humor, some liked it, others did not, as with everything in life, not everyone will enjoy something.
