Happy ks Posted June 19, 2004 #2 Share Posted June 19, 2004 Yikes, I thought it was going to be a story about marshmallows stuffed in her bra! You have to wonder, why the shackles? It's scary to think of a person treated that way for this type of infraction. Kathy

LoriLinay Posted June 19, 2004 #7 Share Posted June 19, 2004 Amazing! I'm so neurotic that I always worry stuff like this will happen to me. Especially when there is a police car behind me. Good thing she didn't somehow have this happen IN Mexico! YIKES!!
Brad1185 Posted June 19, 2004 #8 Share Posted June 19, 2004 They would cuff her but no leg shackles. The want her to walk and not have to be carried. Jewel 07/15 Golden 09/
Family of 14 Posted June 19, 2004 #9 Share Posted June 19, 2004 I read about this story on the Carnival board. Many over there think there out to be a law suit with free cruises for life! IMO, the cruiseline has nothing to do with this in compliance with the law. <MARQUEE>Are you sailing on the Mariner 7/18/04?...Click here! or HERE! </MARQUEE> Disney Wonder 3/2000 ~ Disney Magic 9/2000 ~ RCI Vision 2/2001 ~ Carnival Victory 12/2001 ~ Celebrity Millennium 3/2003 ~ RCI Adventure OTS 9/2003 ~ RCI Mariner OTS 7/18/2004 ~ RCI Serenade OTS 9/26/2004
TimmyII Posted June 20, 2004 #10 Share Posted June 20, 2004 Something is very wrong with this story. I have just retired from the 3rd largest Sheriff's Departmaent in the U.S. and had served as the commander of the Criminal and Fugitive Warrant Division for 15 years. There is a Uniform Criminal Extradidion Act adopted by all states, and it expressly prohibits the extradition of some one for a fine only offense, and therefore it is against Federal policey for one of those "warrants" to be entered into the Federal Wanted Persons Database. (NCIC) If in fact that is all there is to the story, someone in the Law Enforcement loop just may have a major problem. I am surley glad that I don't work for the demanding, or remanding agency. BigDave Posted June 20, 2004 #11 Share Posted June 20, 2004 Timmy, It was entered by the federal park service, so state laws didn't apply. (It's still idiodic though) Now the fact that they entered it after she had paid the fine..... that should be a lot more criminal than forgetting to put away your marshmallows. London, Canada Posted June 20, 2004 #12 Share Posted June 20, 2004 When I read this I thought - Oh my God the poor woman and then - what about Canadians that cross into the US, wonder if they have any records of us. Not that I have anything to worry about, as far as I know. She obviously thought she had nothing to worry about either.

It probably was a clerk at the bottom of the totem pole that made the mistake. They should have a check and balance system and have more than one person verifying the entered information. It makes it all worse because of the underlying offense. I'm still shaking my head. iluvcruzin Posted June 20, 2004 #16 Share Posted June 20, 2004 I guess this is a "waking" for those who have fines they haven't paid based on principle. Still it's a bit extreme how it was handled. jemingway Posted June 20, 2004 #18 Share Posted June 20, 2004 There will be a lawsuit without question. It is not the cruiseline, but rather the government that will be paying. It's not a big case, however. Carnival could get some good publicity if they gave her some freebies. JV The 4 stages of cruising: planning, anticipation, experience and reflection. imosoreal Posted June 21, 2004 #19 Share Posted June 21, 2004 That was a sad story. Now what I want to know is how they will compensate her? What recourse does she have? Will she get her money back? Someone needs to be held accountable.
