Spirit Air

From past experience, Spirit air nickels and dimes you for everything. From seats, to snacks and even water! The woman next to me asked for a cup of water and they wanted to charge her so she asked then if she can have ice instead. They gave her ice so she let it melt so she can drink the water.

I was thinking of taking Spirit out of ACY, but after the pilots strike, delay or cancelled or late flights, and the ridiculous baggage fees I decided to stick with PHL. Hopefully since the State of NJ is taking over the Casino and Entertainment District in AC, and will be funneling some money into the airport to bring in more flights. ACY can add some more airlines and flights, then I'll take a look at AC again.

Spirit Airlines also charges for carry ons. And, if you want to reserve a seat in advance, $10 for the back of the plane, !4 for the middle and 18 for the front. AND, if it is a none stop flight, you have to pay that fee for both parts of the flight. The seats are very small too. Now, the reservation for seats may just be international, i am not sure, But I will never fly Spirit again. They charge for everything.

We were booked on Spirit from Detroit to San Juan for our Serenade cruise in February. They kept changing our schedule and never contacting us. I finally canceled the flights and rebooked with United. We were able to get all our money back with no penalty due to the schedule changes(s).

With all their nickel and dime fees I dont think I will consider them again.

We have always had good flights with Spirit Air, one time we even got back to the airport early enough that they let us change from the late flight to the early flight back to Detroit with no extra charge. I did not book the early flight originally because we had my elderly parents with us, and I wasn't sure what time we'd get back to the airport after the cruise but when we got there early enough we decided it couldn't hurt to ask, and they allowed it so we were grateful that we didn't have to sit at the airport waiting for the later flight.

This time though, our $29 tickets seem to be getting more and more expensive. I knew they charged for checked bags, but just recently learned they charge for carry-ons now too. :( We each can check a bag for $28, and each carry-on is $30. We may take just one carry-on, instead of each of us having one, to save a little $$. And I'm going to try hard to pare down what we want to take and just have one checked back. It should be doable if we do laundry twice.

I've never minded them charging for drinks/snacks. We usually bring something on the plane and it's only a 2-1/2 hour flight so we really don't need much more than a bottle of water really.

I'm not sure we'll pay to choose our seats. It's such a short flight, it wouldn't really even matter if we couldn't sit together. We both usually just read a book anyway. Now for people with kids that would be more of a problem.

Does this have something to do with Royal Caribbean?

Since most of us need to book airfare to get to the cruise port, it would seem a major airline reducing load limits that they charge for would be pertinent. Regardless of the line affected, it certainly plays a role in itinerary chosen, and cruise line chosen.

Hard to be too critical of Sprit, since their rock bottom fares with all sorts of fees tacked on are well-publicized. Even Spirit gets PR mileage from their odd fees. No surprises to the consumer.

I'd be concerned about Spirit surviving another spike in crude prices. They almost didn't survive the one in summer 2008 along with a few other airlines, and several airlines failed. Drive by the local gas station for an indication of where crude prices are trending.
