January cruise in SA

Thinking of a cruise from Argentina to Chile around Cape Horn in Jan.2012 on the Veendam. I know that around the horn at any time of year it can be rough but just wondered if there is a "best time" weather wise". Also would we need to bring along warm clothes for the days we are around the channels and glaciers?

Would appreciate any tips and comments on this trip.

We did this cruise in 2004 on a Princess ship. Ships do this itinerary normally Dec - March. You never know what kind of weather you will have but once you leave Buenos Aires, the weather normally turns cold and can be very windy. It amazed how many on our ship did not bring even a jacket saying " it is summer in South America so it will be hot." The ship made a lot of money selling sweaters and parkas. Check how far south going around the horn is - pretty close to Antartica. For a good description of this itinerary check out

But saying all that, it is a wonderful cruise with marvelous scenery.
