bigfig63 Posted March 27, 2011 #1 Share Posted March 27, 2011 I noticed in the pictures of porthole cabins that there are steel covers that can be clamped down over the windows. It looks like they hinge down. Are those for decoration or has anyone been on a cruise in rough weather where they were ordered to be closed? Just wondering. I won't have to worry about that cause I....am in a suite! lol
firefly333 Posted March 27, 2011 #2 Share Posted March 27, 2011 They block the light if you close them is all. Yes, Iv been in rough water, but never told to shut them.
*Mach* Posted March 27, 2011 #3 Share Posted March 27, 2011 They are there as a precaution... should one of the porthole windows break from whatever cause the hatch can be closed to keep the cabin from taking on any water... :)

The strength of the window actually decreases with surface area.
martinchem Posted March 27, 2011 #5 Share Posted March 27, 2011 They are decorative and funtional but never had to find out if they are necessary.
marshhawk Posted March 27, 2011 #6 Share Posted March 27, 2011 Well something that would hit a port hole window but not a regular window is a fish, and that is because the portholes are in the front of the ship. Someone last year posted a picture of a fish stuck in the window for the whole week. Poor fish.
