Port hole covers

I noticed in the pictures of porthole cabins that there are steel covers that can be clamped down over the windows. It looks like they hinge down.

Are those for decoration or has anyone been on a cruise in rough weather where they were ordered to be closed? Just wondering.

I won't have to worry about that cause I....am in a suite! lol

They are there as a precaution... should one of the porthole windows break from whatever cause the hatch can be closed to keep the cabin from taking on any water...

:)

Not to shoot a hole in this but if that were the case wouldn't they have something similar for rooms with regular windows? The strength of the window actually decreases with surface area.

Well something that would hit a port hole window but not a regular window is a fish, and that is because the portholes are in the front of the ship. Someone last year posted a picture of a fish stuck in the window for the whole week. Poor fish.
