Do I have to tip in USD?

Recommended Posts

Why don't you tip in Euros? they are widely accepted in Europe and I'm sure you have easy access to them in Denmark. The crew is based in Europe in the summer and will probably spending and sending home Euros. I don' think they will mind getting euros for tips.

We have always tipped in euros on cruises in Europe. We just came back from the Liberty transatlantic and actually asked our waiters whether they would prefer dollars or euros for cash tips as we had both this time. They said they really didn't mind, dollars they send home, euros they spend in port.

Well in European waters Euros might be acceptable, though I would always go with the ships currency in terms of tipping as well. However I don´t think you should use DKK for tipping as the crew will have little to no use for it and will have at least as much trouble if not more than you to get it exchanged.

Even if the ship visits Copenhagen on a regular basis, the crew has little time to go and spend it, especially if Copenhagen is the turnaround port.

As for getting USD, you can easily get some onboard. Go to the casino and get some money from them (3% fee applies).

I live in Denmark and I'm sailing from Copenhagen on a Norwegian Fjords cruise. I do not have easy access to USD, so is it acceptable to tip room service in Danish Kroner?

Danish Kroner will not be easily spendable by crew, Euros or USD would be better, you can always change Kroner for USD or Euros on the ship at guest services

I was wondering about this too. After all, on a cruise in Europe, particularly when you have European staff, tipping in Euros will surely be appreciated?

There is not many European crew on RCI ships

That's the answer I got too from the crew I spoke to. They send all their dollars home and keep the Euros to spend in ports, sometimes on things like visiting the seaman's mission so they can contact home.
