klc.1 Posted May 13, 2011 #1 Share Posted May 13, 2011 Can you take a wheelchair on the cable cars, and once at the top are you able to navigate the streets by wheelchair? Lee
CruiserBruce Posted May 13, 2011 #2 Share Posted May 13, 2011 If the person is confined to chair, it will be very difficult. If they can move without the chair, and the chair folds up, you can do it, but it won't be the easiest thing. The streets are, in many locations- particularly the pedestrian areas, cobblestone, and have some steps. However, away from the main tourist areas the streets are paved and the side walks concrete. rebeccalouiseagain Posted May 14, 2011 #3 Share Posted May 14, 2011 I wouldn't recommend it with a wheelchair- no. It is pretty cobbley once you get up there and the walkways are not really wheelchair friendly.
baxterbean Posted May 14, 2011 #4 Share Posted May 14, 2011 What about using a stroller in Santorini? Would that be doable? Thanks!
CruiserBruce Posted May 14, 2011 #5 Share Posted May 14, 2011 Yes, but very bouncy in the cobblestone area. And, for the cable cars, you will probably need to fold up and carry both your young'un and the stroller.
rebeccalouiseagain Posted May 14, 2011 #6 Share Posted May 14, 2011 Strollers are a bit easier to use in general and kids will be able to run around up there- there aren't many cars.

Rare Hlitner Posted May 14, 2011 #8 Share Posted May 14, 2011 The OP asks a great question and needs to do some careful research on Santorini. Not sure if they can get an open wheelchair in the cable car, but that is only one issue. The town of Fira is certainly not a wheelchair friendly place with many rough and angled walkways, steps into many shops and cafes, etc. Fira and Oia are old cities that work hard at keeping their old charm and the ADA does not exist in Europe. In additon, Santorini is a tender port and this can also create some problems for wheelchairs. Many cruise lines operate some excursions that utilize a different tender port, to get the tour folks ashore, where they can board buses. We would suggest looking into these tours and asking the cruise lines whether any of their tours can accomodate wheelchairs. Hank
rebeccalouiseagain Posted May 14, 2011 #9 Share Posted May 14, 2011 I think it would be safer and more enjoyable to do a ship tour given the wheelchair. Look under the excursions and see which ones are wheelchair friendly.
Jonesey Posted May 15, 2011 #10 Share Posted May 15, 2011 We will be going to Santorini in about 2 weeks and one member in our party is wheelchair confined. We are doing the private car ship excursion since I understand Santorini is not very accessible. We will have a driver who will take us wherever we want for 4 hrs and we hope this option will be easier to navigate with the wheelchair.
klc.1 Posted May 16, 2011 Author #11 Share Posted May 16, 2011 Thank you all for your responses --- we will look into a cruise-line sponsored tour.
sunsetbeachgal Posted May 16, 2011 #12 Share Posted May 16, 2011 Was just going to suggest the same as above-a ship's sponsored tour. The ships tours disembark in a different spot than independents, thus do not have to contend with the funicular or donkey's. Santorini is lovely and you won't want to miss it! Good luck! CruiserBruce Posted May 16, 2011 #13 Share Posted May 16, 2011 OP, you will still have the issue of getting back to the ship. Most excursions return to the ship via the cable car. Not sure if any accomadations will be made at the other tendering site of a person can't use the cable car.
