Thinking about trying NCL

Good choice! :D I am another RCI cruiser who is going to try NCL. Well I am going to try NCL again, but my first NCL was 9 years ago so I don't count that. ;)

And I am not too far away from you (I'm in Altoona). Keep telling myself that I need to get out to your casino. But then that just means less money for the cruises. Unless I win, then maybe that would mean more money. :)

I figure there is no bad cruise. And in your case, being a FREE cruise, there REALLY is no bad cruise! Enjoy!

Yes I did know about this site, thank you. And yes the drinks at the machines in vegas are comped and one casino downtown kept bringing my DH 2 at a time ;). Only with a CAS drink card on the ship though (which i get with being comped through CAS. So happy there too.

On one of the casino threads I read that you can buy a $50 slot play coupon for $25 to use on NCL ships. I wasn't sure if you our your friend played slots but thought I'd mention it for your upcomming cruise. Good luck! www slotplaycoupons dot com

Do you know anything about these coupons? Do you just get a coupon that you put in the machine or do you cash it in for $50. I like to play slots now and again. Is there a specific place for casino questions?

I am not a gambler but my mom is. I just went to the web site listed and the full details were available there.

There is a previous thread on these.

Well, I was wrong. Technically, it's not "free" as I said, but instead "complimentary". :)

The actual wording of the certificate reads:

This Cruise Reward Certificate entitles you and a guest to complimentary cruise fare, meals and entertainment aboard an NCL ship with a corresponding itinerary as set forth below.

So, I'm not actually getting it completely free, but at a ~60% discount from the current price (the difference being port fees, taxes, and other non-commissionable fees). I'm getting an inside cabin (category IA) for about $250/person. Nonetheless, their promotion worked in that it's getting me (and my friend) to try NCL. I am really looking forward to the cruise!

Thanks to your wonderful input, I've decided to take a cruise on the Norwegian Spirit for next March. A friend will be joining me to take advantage of this "free" cruise, so that'll be extra nice to have someone to vacation with.

I checked the "Roll Calls" forum and didn't find a thread started for the March 18, 2012, sail date, so I guess once I get booked, I'll get to be the first. :D

The one thing that my friend mentioned which I had overlooked was that this could very well be a spring break cruise for some. From what I've read in others' reviews, that could make it interesting. Fortunately, I'm more of the kind of person to go with the flow, so I doubt it'll make much of a difference to me.

Our introduction to NCL was the 4 day Bahamas cruise on the Sky in March 2010. Spring break. It was a tremendous amount of fun. We are in our mid-50's, and it had been a very long time since I had seen so many young men striving so hard to make a fool of themselves in pursuit of completely uninterested young women. It was very entertaining.

We are Princess and Disney veterans, and I didn't want to commit to longer than 4 days based on the "reviews" from friends who preferred other lines. I had very low expectations. We love NCL now, and its our preferred cruise line, having added a Euro cruise on the Jade and just finishing a repo cruise on the Star. The Freestyle dining makes the difference for us, as we never liked the formal nights on the other lines (we ate in the buffet or had room service rather than let "the man" tell us how we should dress).

People who really enjoy the formal nights often feel there's something essential missing ... as my cousin tells me, "when can I get my husband and son dressed up for a family picture without a formal night?"

That may be what decides it for you too. I wouldn't worry too much about Spring Break issue. Even though the CD told us that half the passengers were under 26, they really were pretty well behaved, in a moderately hedonistic sort of way.
