Needing your help.....

..for suggestions or ideas. We will sail from Bayonne, NJ next March on a Monday. We plan to fly into Newark on Saturday and would love to tour and/or see as much as possible of New York/Manhattan as possible on Sunday. So far I am thinking a bus tour. What are your suggestions or ideas? I have been there before, but DH, DS & DD (both older teens) have not. Hotel in NJ or NY? If in NJ - how do we get to NY? Do tours pick up at various locations? Please share your experience or what you know.

Hello Sapphireblue,

I would suggest staying in New York City perhaps on the upper west side. There are several nice and affordable hotels in this area, The Hotel Beacon on 74th and Broadway or the Lucerne on 79th between Columbus and Broadway.

The upper west side is a nice location to stay it is a residential area and not cluttered with crowds like hotels in Times Square. It's much nicer to be in New York where you can step out and begin your adventures. On the upper west side you will be close to places like Lincoln Center, Central Park and the Museum of Natural History, plus famous buildings like the Dakota on 72nd and Central Park West.

The city is best discovered on foot. You can take a hop on hop off bus tour most of them make pick ups in the Times Square area. With only a day you will not see everything but, pick a spot to explore and enjoy your time wandering the neighborhood streets. The Financial District is a popular destination with lots of history and winding streets. Greenwich Village is a very popular spot to browse at shops and intersting boutiques.

A cab from the upper west side to Bayonne will run around $60 to $80. Get yourself a guide book and figure out what appeals to you most and plan an itinerary. Oyster.com is very helfpul with lots of pictures and reviews of New York City Hotels.

If you're serious about making a hotel reservation, there are two good options right now on Hotwire. There's a 4* Times Square hotel for 3/17-19 for $146 - this would probably be the Crowne Plaza, the Millennium, the Hilton, or Inter-Continental. This would put you in the heart of the action. You can take the airport bus to this area for $15/pp.

A New Jersey option would be a 4* hotel in Jersey City for $97. This would be either the Westin or Hyatt. Either hotel would be located by a Path station, which would be about a 20 minute ride to midtown or 10 minute ride to downtown http://www.panynj.gov/path/maps.html. This would be a quieter area at night with spectacular views of NY from either property. Cab to Jersey City would be about $50 and about the same to the port. There would also be a public transit option to Bayonne ($2.10/pp) plus a $10 cab ride into the port.
