Freeport - What to do?

Carnival just changed our itinerary for our upcoming cruise. We are now doing Freeport on our last day from 7 am to 2 pm., instead of the first day from noon till 7 pm.

Thinking about sleeping in and just staying on board. Not sure if Billy Joes will be open for business at 9 a.m. on a Sunday morning for fresh conch.

catch a cab into Our Lucaya and shop a little and enjoy the beach. Apparently they are charging to get to the beach around the Hotels now so you have to walk down the street past the Police station to a long walkway public access. Not really a big deal once on the beach as it is the same beach that people are being charged for.

We were in Freeport last week and we took the shuttle to Our Lucaya.. It was $10 each return. The driver dropped us off in front of a hotel (believe it was called the Gran Bahama) and told us to follow the path which would take us to the beach. There was no charge to use the beach and it was beautiful. After a few hours we decided to visit the straw market and do a bit of shopping. Our driver had arranged to pick up our group of 10 at 12:30 so we ended up inside the hotel in the casino for half an hour while waiting to go back to the ship.. it was very hot so the nice air conditioned casino was a nice place to wait.

We loved Freeport and just wish we had longer there.. We also sailed at 2:00 p.m. Enjoy your day :)

I have a similiar question to the original poster, but we have 2 kids (12 and 5), but we will be in Freeport from 7-2 also, and I am wondering of there is something inexpensive that the kids would like, preferably other than the beach (we aren't real big beach people, and we are going to the beach in Nassau)... any ideas would be appreciated!

Not inexpensive really, but look into a dolphin encounter or riding ponies on the beach - kids should like that, or swimming or snorkeling or doing watersports like hobie cats or trampoline.

ReelG8r, have you checked out the roll call board for our cruise lately? We now have several people listed, yea! Since we are going to Atlantis in Nassau, I was planning on Freeport being our trip to the beach, otherwise I might just stay on the ship. We aren't beach lovers but did want to see and experience the beautiful blue water, although as a non-morning person I preferred the afternoon time of the original itinerary.

I am going in 2 weeks and staying all inclusive at the Wyndham Viva Fortuna. Upon my return I will tell you guys all about actually being on the island for weekdays and weekends. I have done a cruise before there and it is a good place just to go to the beach and socialize have a good time. This time I will check out the casino and nightlife. Wish me luck!:D

Reelg8r - we're on the same cruise you're on and we are disappointed in the itinerary change. Much preferred the Friday noon - 7pm in Freeport.

We're trying to figure out what to do that early in the morning and be back on the Fascination by noon-1pm on Sunday.......

Anyone familiar with the Seaworld Explorer in Freeport? The excursion isn't real cheap, but it's a lot less expensive than the Dolphin encounters, and my 5 year old has never done this type of boat. Just wondering if anyone that has been on it can give an opinion - thanks!

We originally had reservations to snorkel Deadman's Reef at Paradise Cove in Freeport from 1pm to 5pm. Now that it is changed, we may change it to Sunday from 10am to noon. We'll lose a couple of hours but oh well.....

Don't know if there is an excursion to Lucaya National Park, but it is always open. It is a little bit of a ride (about 30 minutes from the port) but for non-beach goers, it is fun. There is a trail that takes you to two small caves (sort of neat with kids especially if the bats are there). Then, on the other side of the park, there are two trails that lead to the beach. The trails are fun to walk, bring bread and feed the fish in the caves and along the trails. If you like to bird watch, this is the best spot. Also, there is the Nature Tours, which go to the park as well as other places. They have kayaking, which is always fun. Sunday Morning is tough, since a lot of the places are closed. But, there are tons of churches if you are interested in attending a truly unique experience. Also, the kids might like the Taino Beach Club. They have a lazy river and water slide, hammocks and are on the beach. They have a Brunch that is great, not sure if you can buy a day pass or if there is an excursion you can get. Hope you have fun!

Anyone know anything about the Garden of the Groves near Freeport?

In Freeport, definitely book an excursion. There is nothing at the port. I recommend, Garden of the Groves. It's a botanical garden, I don't usually go for stuff like that but this was very nice. They have food there and a few small shops, so bring money.

Any details on this pony ride at a beach. Where? How much? Any details?
