johnh530 Posted March 17, 2005 #1 Share Posted March 17, 2005 I have an opportunity to sail on the Zuiderdam with a pretty good single occupancy rate on the 4-16 sailing. I have not sailed on this line before & just looking for opinions. Thanks!
Host Caroline Posted March 17, 2005 #2 Share Posted March 17, 2005 Not sure of your age.. HAL tends to attract a bit older crowd but I'm in 50s and love HAL.. would jump at the chance to go on Zuidie... The staff is attentive and although you can never predict how many solo travelers there are, there are lots of places to meet people onboard during happy hour, etc. I've read some negatives about HAL but they are far outweighed by the positives. Have sailed HAL x 3 and will definitely do again. If it's a good rate and you enjoy a laid back, slightly more formal cruise experience... I'd take it... Classynfun1 Posted March 17, 2005 #3 Share Posted March 17, 2005 I have an opportunity to sail on the Zuiderdam with a pretty good single occupancy rate on the 4-16 sailing. I have not sailed on this line before & just looking for opinions. Thanks! Do it! I'm paying a horrible rate for an inside single SHARE ($4K) to do a b2b cruise to the Med. this summer. I'm only 25, but not looking to *party*, hook-up, etc. so I knew it would be perfect for the experience I was looking for. Hopefully it will live up to hype! Let me know how it goes! johnh530 Posted March 17, 2005 Author #4 Share Posted March 17, 2005 I should have stated I am 41 years old. I heard it was an older crowd, but I heard that about Princess too & actually found it was not much different from the crowd on Carnival, exceot for Alaska which was an older croud for sure. So I guess it depends on destination & not just cruise line.
Fisherlady48 Posted March 17, 2005 #5 Share Posted March 17, 2005 You will be in the perfect age group. And a single guy, you will have a good time and lots of chances to dance if you want, just visit and meet lots of new aquantances. Have a blast. My next cruise will be HAL, after this RCCL. I don't know that Carnivale will see me again. Im not 25 anymore. That is of course they do a cruise with ports that I just have to go to. I am more into ports of call, then the cruise line then the ship.
Faith77 Posted March 19, 2005 #6 Share Posted March 19, 2005 I did a cruise out of NY to Canada with Carnival a year or so ago in early June--loved spending a few days first visiting with old friends and sightseeing in NY. I enjoyed my Carnival cruise--we had a great solo table at late night dinner, the casino was hopping and fun, and there was loads of night time entertainment. I found most people friendly and open to chat and was not overwhemled with small children. I try to stay away from summer and holiday cruising--I figure that's when prices are sky high and all the extended families cruise. I'm open to all the lines and am not brand loyal. I've definately got my eye on a HAL cruise in the future. Faith
Rare Roz Posted March 19, 2005 #7 Share Posted March 19, 2005 John, Do it! I've taken 3 HAL cruises, 2 of them solo, and have another solo cruise booked for this coming December. I'm 52 now, started cruising when I was 48. On my Eastern Caribbean cruise this past December, there was a 40 yr. old single man at my table, as well as a single woman a little older than me. Everyone seemed to be having a great time. I keep coming back to HAL because of it being a more refined, relaxing cruise experience, the lower single supplement, and the way I'm treated as a single cruiser. Give it a try. There's a thread over at the Celebrity board about the high single supplements on Celebrity. High supplements are the main reason I haven't tried other cruise lines. Why do I want to pay 200% on RCCL when I can get sail a more upscale line like HAL for 140%? Roz
Rare Lois R Posted March 20, 2005 #8 Share Posted March 20, 2005 Hi John:) I sailed the Zuiderdam in Sept (first time on HAL) and my experience was less than stellar. I agree the price was good but when I left the ship it wasn't worth that price to me. We all have different expectations and as you can read, everyone else on this thread really likes HAL so I guess I am the odd woman out here. My cruise wasn't more upscale~food was only mediocre and service was definitely lacking. Enjoy your cruise, whatever you decide:)
Iggipolka Posted April 7, 2005 #9 Share Posted April 7, 2005 I have my second HAL cruise coming up in 7 months and I can't wait! This will be my first solo cruise ever, but I so enjoyed my last trip with HAL that I knew who I'd want to cruise on again. HAL's single supplement rates are great too!
