Ideas for Post-Cruise Day Excursions - Rome

I'm looking for ideas about what to do for one day after our June 17th Celebrity Equinox cruise. We'll be spending several nights in Rome prior to the cruise and have a 7 a.m. flight out of FCO the day after our cruise returns to Civitavecchia. We're currently booked at the Hilton at the airport for the night before our return flight.

 

Right now, we're thinking about renting a car at Civitavecchia, driving to the Hilton to drop off our luggage and then taking a day trip somewhere before returning the car. Another thought might be going to the beach at Lido di Ostia and maybe staying there for the night rather than the airport. We are a family of two adults and two daughters in their 20's.

 

Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help!

Or if you are more into the ancient than the Renaissance, Ostia Antica (the old port of Rome) is well worth a visit and it is not far from where you're staying. The ruins are extensive, like those of Pompeii, but generally much less crowded.

The beaches near Rome are serviceable if you live in Rome and can only get that far for the day, but they're nothing to write home about. I wouldn't use a day of my vacation going to the beach there.
