How much does the alcoholic drinks cost while on a Carnival cruise?

Recommended Posts

It's our first time to cruise - myself, son (23) and daughter and son-in-law (both 25) and my 1 yr old granddaughter and we were wondering how much does the alcoholic drinks cost and what are we allowed to bring with us, drinkwise?

Drinks cost about what you would expect to pay in a bar. Exact price depends on what you drink, but anywhere from five something each up. Some wines are over $12 a glass. Soda is about 2.50 a can. A fifteen percent tip is added to every purchase. You can usually bring some soda and bottled water on board. You can not bring liquor or beer aboard. Excerpt from the Carnival beverage policy:

Liquor and Beverage Policy

Bringing Alcohol On Board - Embarkation Day:

Guests are prohibited from bringing alcoholic beverages on board. However, at the beginning of the cruise during embarkation day, guests (21 years of age and older) may bring on board one bottle (750ml) of wine or champagne, per person, only in their carry-on luggage. A $10 corkage fee per bottle will be charged should you wish to consume this wine in the main dining room; $14 corkage fee per bottle in the steakhouse. (A corkage fee is a charge exacted at a restaurant for every bottle of liquor served that was not bought on the premises)

On embarkation day, guests may bring a small quantity (package of 12 per person) of non-alcoholic beverages onboard, only in their carry-on luggage.

All alcohol/hard liquor/beer (sealed, unopened bottles/cans), wine/champagne over the allowable 1-bottle per guest (sealed, unopened bottles) or excessive quantities of non-alcoholic beverages (over 12 per person, sealed, unopened bottles/cans) will be confiscated and stored for safekeeping until the end of the voyage. The retained item(s) will be available for collection in onboard designated location on the morning of debarkation. Unsealed liquids that are prohibited will be discarded, as well as any unclaimed items left after the voyage, and no compensation will be given in either case.

Each person (including children) is allowed to bring a 12 pack of soda, water or juice on board in the carryon only. A bottle of wine per adult is also allowed. No alcohol or beer is allowed.

I suggest you do not get one of the drinks in tall glasses that lots of waiters will be carrying when you board. These are priced higher. You do get to keep the glass, but then how do you take a glass back with you without fear of it breaking? Just ask a waiter or bartender to get you a drink in a regular glass instead. Oh, and it does not save any money to order at the bar -- you still pay the 15% tip. So you might as well sit back in a lounger and have the drinks brought to you. Also, no free drinks in the casino. Well, OK, with Carnival you can get free drinks after you earn 1500 points, but that is a heck of a lot of gambling for me. You can get free drinks at the Carnival party around 5pm the last full day -- but these are limited to selected pre-made drinks. Still, it is free (OK, "complimentary"). RCCL has free champagne at the Captain's party. And past guests get another party with free drinks on most cruise lines.

Soda is about 2.50 a can.

$1.95 a can + 15% tip

There is an unlimited soda sticker available. $6 a daypp + 15% The break even is 3 sodas. It also includes juices and mixed soda drinks (ie-Cherry Coke)

Also, if you decide to eat at the Steakhouse there has been a special. A free bottle of wine the first night of the cruise. You do not have to finish it at dinner and can take it back to yoiur cabin.

On Carnival I ask for the HOUSE wine, $5.75, my husband get the HOUSE gin & tonic (beefeaters gin) for $5.25. With automatic 15% tip, total is $12.65. If you don't ask for the 'HOUSE' you will be given alcohol that is more expensive but we've never had a problem with 'house'.

I always tell 1st time cruisers to sit down the last morning before you look at your final bill which was slipped under your door the last night. If your not sitting, you will fall over when you see how much it is! It is so easy to but another drinlk or two because you're not using cash. On most ships you can see the running balance of everything you've bought on board every day on your TV or get a print out from the purser's desk.

Just cruised in late March and your "house" wine is now $6.25, and I suspect the other house drinks have also increased....it's now becoming a concern because these are premium prices......and they keep going up.

its plastic- what can break??

these plastic cups are 2.00 more then a regular drink. and they can be refilled for the going rate of a regular drink but you are getting about 2 oz more drink.

So buy the plastic cup and use it the rest of the week for refills

What ship did you cruise on in March??? We cruised the Glory on April 23rd and the Fantasy on May 4th, 2011. On both cruises we paid what I said, total of $12.65 for 2 'house' drinks. Just make sure you get the 'house' drinks. Once they charged me $6.25 and I called them on that, it wasn't the 'house' wine. Maybe you didn't get the house drinks! We are going on the Glory again June 27th. If prices have gone up, I'll let you know........... maybe.

Oh, if you get a drink, any drink, before you are 'at sea' you pay more as taxes are added.

OK I thought each person could take on water AND soda, so it's one or the other?

Thanks for this! Last one I saw was from like 2009!

Depends on the port/state.

Anybody know if South Carolina is a port that charges taxes while still in port?

Hmmmm...I remember glass, but then I think I did not buy it at the pool area were glass is not allowed. Are you sure the tall glasses hold more? I thought I read they held the same amount as the regular glasses. Thanks for the info.

Yes, you get a receipt with every drink you buy. You sign the waiter's and are given one for you. All drinks and their location bought (and the time bought) will also be on your final bill that you will get under your door the last morning. You can also check everything you have bought on your room TV at any time!

We will be going on our first cruise, however I was wondering if you a get receipt when you buy drinks from the bar telling you how much you just paid?

'

you get a receipt for everything-- even for room service with no charge.

On most ships there is a funvision channel which allows you to see what each person signed for.

On the bottom on the card will be a folio number

  • 5 months later...

We were just on the Carnival Dream on November 12, 2011 and these prices are accurate. We could not believe what an increase since we cruised 3 years ago. Also a bucket of 4 beers with tip $24.75. Over $6.00 for one beer is just crazy! The prices are getting absolutely ridiculous! No wonder people try and smuggle alcohol on with them.

These are about what you would pay at any decent restaurant/night club.
