Vancouver hotel near airport

I’m helping some friends plan because I'm weird and find it fun, lol.

They will be arriving in Vancouver around 8pm and have purchased ship transfers for the next day. Since they are getting in so late they don’t plan on any sight seeing and want to be near the airport so they can go back there to meet the transfer.

Ideally, they are looking for something with a free shuttle to/from airport, somewhere nearby to grab a bite to eat after they arrive even thought it will be late, and free breakfast.

I saw there is a casino with a hotel not far from the airport which would work for a late dinner and give the DH something to do in the morning while the DW sleeps in a bit, assuming it is a 24 hour casino. But they don’t have a shuttle so I am wondering about taxi costs. But that is just one option that popped out at me right away. Of course they are open to just a normal hotel as well.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks so much!

I really wouldn't recommend staying near the airport, it's so easy (25 mins on a direct subway line or about the same in a taxi) to a downtown hotel walking distance from the pier.

If you do decide to stay at River Rock http://riverrock.com/ it's co-located with the Canada Line airport to downtown train, get on at RiverRock (called Bridgeport station) and $3.75 later you're 3 blocks from the cruise terminal. If you wanted, a taxi is probably $30 from River Rock.

But again, it's really so easy to get downtown, there's no reason not to.

virtually every hotel at the airport normally has a shuttle. I'd feel comfortable having you use Hotwire.com for this type of need. You can always select a higher star level and Hotwire tells you if there is a shuttle and or restaraunt onsite. The transfer for two should only be about $35 by cab so hopefully you didn't spend too much. If you did stay at the Casino you can easily take the lt rail back to the airport pretty cheaply.

Yes River rock casino is open 24/7 - if you stay there and you need to get back to the airport to pick up your transfer - you can take the Canada Line spur to the Airport for $2.50 a person - there is plenty of room for luggage as the cars were designed to handle that type of traveling public.

There are a couple of large food courts and full service restaurants at the Airport and there is certainly food service available at the casino.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Dennis

Since your friends have already purchased a ship transfer, then staying at the River Rock would make it easy for them to get back to the airport next day. It's a very short ride on Canada Line to/from the airport. I suppose they could take a taxi, but I'm not sure many cabbies would be thrilled to go such a short distance.

As Urbantrekker also suggested, the Fairmont @ YVR is an excellent hotel. It's more expensive, but your friends wouldn't have to worry about transportation back and forth and they'd have access to the hotel restaurant (very good) as well as the food outlets at the airport.

If these folks were to stay at River Rock and then take the train back to the airport to catch their transfer..... why dont they skip a step? Cancel the transfer and take the train down to Canada Place instead? (assuming it is Canada Place.)

Totally agree, it's insane to head back to the airport for a transfer that is probably $40/ea vs a subway (roll on roll off) which is $3.75 and drops you about a cruise ship length away from the dock.
