Do It Yourself Split?

Can anyone give us some ideas for a DIY day in Split? We are there in May as part of an Adriatic cruise. We enjoy exploring by ourselves but, don't like to venture too far!

 

We enjoy scenery, seeing how the local people live, gardens & generally just taking in the atmosphere. My husband is a keen photographer so any tips of places "not to be missed" for a good picture would also be appreciated.

 

Also, what is the weather generally like in May?

We are in Split on 11th.

Have been looking for information on this port and whether it is possible to leave the ship and walk or taxi somewhere interesting without doing a guided tour. We will be there in October.

We will be there in early June. The Riva promenade along the water front is supposed to be lovely and the old town and palace area are a short walk. Apparently very easy to DIY walk in town or can get a walking tour from the tourist info centre. We also plan to rent bikes for the afternoon for the short ride out to Marjan Park...trails, beaches, parks and views out there. Bikes can be rented along the Riva or in town by palace area.

You can easily do Split on your own, even hire a local guide for $10. However, we wanted to see more. Our tour took us to Trogir, an old city about an hour from Split. It was well worth the extra bucks.

Get off the tender and look for the archway in the wall beyond the bars. This was originally the boat exit from the palace into the sea. The promenade in front was made later. The Windows in the wall were the original palace.

 

Use a guide book as you can do it easily yourself as its a small place but it's worth reading why the streets are called what they are and what happened in the square. The market is right o the arch or go in the arch nd explore the cellars.

If you have time consider going to see The Villa and sculptures of Ivan Mestrovic. You can walk (over half an hour) or take a taxi.) His sculptures are amazing. Be sure to go to the chapel down the road for his wood bas reliefs. We found his painting of the Last Supper fascinating, and interesting to compare to Leonardo's.

The main site to see in Split is Diocletian's palace. Diocletian was a 3rd and 4th Centuries Roman Emperor from the area. He was the first Roman Emperor to actually retire from the office voluntarily, without loosing his head.
